    Detachable Collars

Every historical reenactment or historical TV show I've ever seen has the collars OUTSIDE the shirt. One particularly good example can be seen in one of the last episodes of "Upstairs, Downstairs". Hudson is helping his master, Lord Bellamy, get dressed for his last session in parliament...

    Terms Which Have Disappeared

The first time I heard the word "Constitutional" to mean "walk", was in the film "101 Dalmatians", when the couple and their dogs go out for the night. "Aaaah! There they go! Off on their evenin' Constitutional...'Round the Johnny 'orner...and off...into the park..."

    Terms Which Have Disappeared

You wouldn't have a website or something, where I could read more about this would you, Lizzie? It all sounds extremely interesting. And regarding lavatorial episodes, I've heard everything from: "Seeing a Man about a Horse", "A Call of Nature", Using the "Facilities", to much, much cruder ones.

    Terms Which Have Disappeared

"4F" is "Four Front", isn't it? You had to have at least four front teeth to join the infantry, or else you couldn't rip your cartridge to load the musket. What the heck is "1-A"? I've never heard of that before. Talking of military/army codes/acronyms, etc., I'm reminded of this one...

A Day That Will Live In Infamy

I don't know what it is exactly, but I do notice a lot of those sorta attitudes on various online forums. Not necessarily HERE, but in other places (and not necessarily history forums). The ignorance, willful or otherwise, of some people, or on the other hand, the mistaken beliefs held by some...

Are There Any Men Who Do Not Talk Much Left?

The oldest man I know personally, is my uncle (born 1935, currently 78 years old). The stories he could tell... He's a great conversationalist. I love talking to him. He's always funny and has amazing stories and tales to tell. He's witty and extremely eloquent - one would expect nothing less...

    December 7,1941

I often wondered about that statement. It's nice to know (albeit sadly) that it was actually verified.

A Day That Will Live In Infamy

I think it's because most people don't know bugger-all about the Sino-Japanese war which started in 1937. They associate "WWII" with 1939, and that any year before 1939 was bathed in sunshine, happiness and bouncing bunnies.

Gentlemen, show us what you've made!

Feraud, I love the black leather bag you made. I wish I could work with leather, but it's so expensive over here. You wouldn't think so, since Australia eat so much beef, but...*sigh*

A Day That Will Live In Infamy

A lot of things happened on December 7th/8th, 1941 which most people forget about. And Lizzie is right. You have to understand the attack on PH. It wasn't JUST to piss off the Americans or to get them into the war, or anything like that. The Japanese had a MASTER PLAN. That plan was to...

You're thinking of Casein. I think C/S was one of the few companies to use that plastic. Most used celluloid. That said, celluloid has its own hazards...

Comments You Get When You Dress Vintage

I was on a commuter train last week, going to an appointment. It was (and still is) unseasonably cold this time of year. So I was wearing a darker, brown outfit, with my brown fedora on top. I was sitting in a mostly empty carriage at the back of the train, and this other guy looks up and said I...

    "The Vanishing El" (1950)

I always found elevated railway systems to be fascinating...and trains in general. Everytime I think of them, I'm reminded of that line from "12 Angry Men". I don't recall it exactly, but it went something like this: "Have any of you ever lived near an El? I have! And when those trains go...
