    Terms Which Have Disappeared

Thanks - I have always wondered where the supposed insult of "honky" came from, and why it was supposed to be an insult to begin with. A word/insult without apparent meaning never carried much weight with me, and now that I know where it came from, it carries even less weight. I have never had...

    Today in History

Republic Steel wasn't the only company that acquired a considerable number of firearms for "plant security" purposes. When the Model of 1921 Thompson sub-machinegun was introduced, the Army and Marines bought a few of the initial batch for testing. Just three weeks later the first of several...

    Unexploded WWII Bomb

"Danger: UXB" - It was a BBC series from a long time ago (1979). In my opinion it was the best British dramatic program ever made. I'd very much like to see it again if I could.

    Terms Which Have Disappeared

Don't feel bad about not being able to mimic one of the *many* Southern dialects. There are a number of famous and/or Academy-Award-winning actors who can't do it either. Two that come to mind are Paul Newman and Carroll O'Connor. I can't bear to hear them try to do a realistic Southern...

    Terms Which Have Disappeared

Most Southerners I know consider the northern 3/4 of Florida as really being part of the South. The bottom end is referred to as Lower New Jersey (in terms of accent and attitude). (As Michigan has the Upper Peninsula as a physically detached portion of the State, so has New Jersey with south...

You know you are getting old when:

One area of industrial-era products-collecting that emphatically rejects the refinishing craze is gun collecting. An old saying is that if you want to turn a $1000 dollar gun into a $500 gun, just refinish it. There are some uninformed amateurs who seem stunned when they find out that they have...

What Was The Last Movie You Watched?

I'll add a second positive opinion of this one. I didn't recognize the name, having seen it only once, but your one-sentence description was enough to make me remember it in some detail. All your positive comments are 100% on target. If a movie sticks in your memory after just one viewing you...

You know you are getting old when:

You are exactly right. The skate key tightened the clamp-on steel skates (old-style) to the bottom of your regular shoes. The skates were oversize so you used the key to make them fit each person's shoes (adjust inward). Maybe the ones in England worked better, but here they were a major-scale...

You know you are getting old when:

Around here about half the booths at the antique places are now "MCM". As someone who was born around mid-century, that stuff was our ordinary furniture (and etc.) so it's not anything special to me. I like a lot of old stuff, but furniture isn't one of them. I had one of the big wooden...

You know you are getting old when:

As a leading-edge Baby Boomer (1948 Model), I enjoyed the "rock and roll" music a lot in those days (1960's). However, for the most part the '60's music in particular - in my opinion - was never meant to be listened to in the way the music of prior generations was. You might go to a live...

So trivial, yet it really ticks you off.

Good for you! I think most of us who buy old stuff have a few stories like that. My favorite for myself is buying a pre-WWI ammunition belt for $5 from an estate auction. Sold it later for $250.

    Vintage Cars

In the Golden Age of drag racing (1960's) someone put a supercharged fuel-burning Hemi in the cargo compartment of a Dodge pickup of that type. It would "wheelstand" for almost the full quarter mile.

So trivial, yet it really ticks you off.

I have always considered lack of knowledge by sellers - flea markets, pawn shops, antique stores, etc. - to be a very good thing. If they have something they think is rare and valuable, but isn't, I just walk away. If they have something that really is rare and valuable and they don't know it...

    The Fragmentation Of History

I'll be GLAD to take any and all of those horrible pieces of paper with "Old Hickory's" picture on them that other people don't want.

So trivial, yet it really ticks you off.

And those of us who don't care very much about baseball can just let it go as other persons' interest. No harm to me for not getting it...

    Old gas stations

I'm glad this photo was posted today. I found a set of 1941 Maine license plates in a Nashville antiques store and planned to get in touch and see if you wanted them. Fortunately you already have a set. They weren't cheap - $100/pair - but at least were in very good condition for the price.

    Clean Jokes

Also not a joke, but it seems like one: There was an article in the local paper about a small-town mayor in the vicinity named "Richard Head". A politician named "Richard Head"... (I can't imagine the teasing he experienced growing up.)

So trivial, yet it really ticks you off.

I give up... Why would ANYBODY put laundry bluing in their beer to begin with? How would anybody know that anything other than possible suicide would result? If someone knew in advance what to expect, I am very impressed with their knowledge of chemistry. Somehow it reminds me of that scene...

    Show us your vehicles

Very nice vehicle. It's good enough that I thought it was real for a moment until I saw the twin torsion bar VW front suspension. Did you do build it yourself or is there a company that makes replicas?

    Today in History

On this day in 1994, I heard the news that Kurt Cobain had killed himself. My first (only) reaction was, "Who in the h--- is Kurt Cobain?"
