Here's a long thread on military uniforms:

I don't think it covers the early 1900s, but you might find someone in the thread you could PM. The thread has lots of interesting information on uniforms.
Just a few things I noted looking at...
Being organized helps. Little things like sorting through clean but unfolded laundry, searching for sock, shoe and earring mates, realizing you haven't steamed the shirt you were going to wear--it all adds minutes.
Having a good haircut helps, too. It's hard to style overgrown or badly cut...
Eastern Explanations, Mom's Remedy
In traditional Eastern medicine, sinus problems can be caused by feelings of worry, grief or guilt. The feelings can cause tension that closes your sinus passages. (I used to have a lot of sinus infections when I was in school and working in a different field...
Impromptu with Katie Glassman. It was a five-piece band (fiddle, bass fiddle, piano, drums and trumpet) that played mostly 20s and 30 music in general and several songs by Django Reinhardt in particular. They played a good variety of tempos and styles, they started on time, and they sounded...
The previous owners of my 100-year-old house had a contemporary theme, and it just didn't work. My next-door neighbor has a mission style theme, which is the best I've seen around here.
This is what I admire:
Every weekend, [from October until May], the couple drove two hours from their home in Brooklyn to the house, undertaking all of the necessary reconstruction themselves, except the re-roofing, which was done by a contractor. Both urbanites, neither had ever tackled a...
You don't have sinuses behind your teeth or by your ears, but sinus pressure can make those areas hurt. (Incidentally, my otolaryngologist told me that 10% of the population doesn't develop frontal sinuses.) TMJ problems can also feel like sinus pain.
If your friend has sinus pain, I suggest...
The last band I saw was 5280, a big band. They sound good, but IMO, should play more swing music at swing dances, and less music that sounds better as R&B.
The last performance I saw was a production of Oklahoma at the Littleton Town Hall Arts Center. It was well done.
You said it before I could. I think if you trot out every cliche, you look more vintage than the people who were there. Imagine someone in 20 years trotting out every fad we've seen in the past few years and pulling it into one outfit:
Feather boa
Multicolored streaked hair
Antique brooch...
I'm sure people understand the subject; they just haven't found much to say about it. As far as making jokes about specific people who have been dead for some 100 years, you either like it or you don't.
I am sorry about your situation. I went through many layoffs when I was in the engineering field. To make it worse, people seem to think that if you have an engineering degree, you can run out and get a $100,000 a year job. But life has a curious way of working out.
Six years ago...
"Too busy" is the answer I give when I don't want to go out with someoe. But I'll remember the request for a straight answer the next time I'm asked out.
"Would you like to see a movie next Saturday?"
"NO!"
Kidding aside, whenever somebody hems and haws, I assume they don't want to comply...
There was a show in the U.S. in the 70s and early 80s called M*A*S*H about an army field hospital during the Korean War. There was concern about how it would be received. The show poked fun at the pompous (Maj. Charles Emerson Winchester III) the childish (Maj. Frank Burns) the inflexible (Maj...
Harry Potter and Philosophy: If Aristotle Ran Hogwarts
This is a collection of 16 philosophical essays using Harry Potter stories as examples. Subjects include the nature of evil, friendship, appearance vs. reality, ambition and others. It's written not in scholarly gobbledygook (for lack of a...
I meant to post the link to the book:

I suppose I'm being too literal, but anytime I hear the staff at the CPA firm where I work referred to as "kids," I think, "We have 12-year-olds preparing tax returns?"
