fmw - Unless I miss my mark totally, that's just a plain old 7X modern Stetson western. The Xs on that hat don't necessarily mean anything hard and fast as far as beaver content. I've got 5, 6, 7 and 10X hats from what appears to be the same time period, and they are nice, but definitely not...
Andy - the Stylemaster looks good on you. One thing that should be mentioned about taller crowns is that you can always put a crease in them that brings down the height quite a bit. Hard to do the opposite with a short crowned hat. Try a Fed IV, I like them very much. Frank
Thanks for all the kind comments. He was a lot of fun right up until he died three months after turning 99. Still rode his horse until two months before his death. I was lucky to spend a lot of time with him. He gave me my first high-quality Stetson cowboy hat before I turned three...
Forgive me the first hatless photo, but I've always liked the look on Clara Bow's face. With my grandfather in Palm Springs. Before you ask, she was there with her husband, and I never asked for any more details.
Taken from a book my aunt made after his funeral, the ONLY photo I've ever...
Any of you knowledgeable folks ever heard of Ash (of) London? I recently got a huge, heavy leather jacket from eBay with that label. It needed a cleaning, and I still need to sew on a replacement button or two, but for what I paid, I like it a lot. Sort of a single breasted leather Pea Coat...
Blackthorn - I can sympathize with your position completely. Perhaps because I wear a larger size hat, that takes up more room, many of my purchases arrive in exactly that same shape. I've even had two come back from hatters for refurbishing that were bent like that. I've also had packages...
Photos would help with the decision, but I wouldn't shy away from sending it to Optimo. If you're going to wear it, and not concerned about its collectibility, especially the sweatband markings, have them clean it and replace the sweat with one of their great leather sweatbands. I've done the...
"Paul McCartney Really Is Dead: The Last Testament of George Harrison." Scarily bad filmmaking at its shoddiest. Scared my wife so bad she fell asleep. The "George Harrison" voice-over was so badly done that I will have nightmares all night. Shame on MI5 for keeping this terrible secret from...
Making some much needed room, and these items don't get worn much here in the desert.
First up, a vintage, made in the U.S. Pendleton tweed coat, 100% wool, with leather Pendleton collar tab, size 56. This one could go western, or uptown dressy. $70
Next is a 60% cotton, 40% linen...
Popps235 - the answer is no, that's way too much "padding up," and will look very silly. You should definitely sell any 7 7/8 hats right away. Preferrably to me. I might even have a decent Open Road in your size that I bought for my wife. Plus, get your post count up so greedy...
The first Billy Jack movie was "Born Losers," which I remember watching from the backseat of a car at the drive-in. My parents thought it was okay to see a violent movie because my sister and I were asleep, until I started cheering at the bikers getting whooped by Billy Jack. The first one...
I had the Frazetta covers set when I was young, and I spent nearly as much time staring at the princess Dejah Thoris as I did reading the book. Looking forward to seeing the four-armed Tars Tarkas as well. It'll be interesting to see how much I remember, since I haven't read one of these books...
"Big heads." Please. Try finding a Whippet in 7 7/8. The truly large-headed hat hunter must be extra patient. I will keep my eye open for you Mr. Lucky, as we've done business before. You never know. I've found Resistol Kitten Finish (2), one semi-vintage Open Road, and others in my size...
