    Cheap Fedora

So, for me $120 on an Akubra is cheap (for what you get) $20 in a thrift store is better but that is only any good for 'extra' hats because you can't plan on a style or a colour being there when you want it. To give some examples from my own modest collection... my Stylemaster cost me $120, my...

Moonstone Federation 4 in Mexico...am i gonna melt??

As Akubra is an Australian made hat, I believe that everyone should be using Celsius when discussing the temperature. Shouldn't they?

    What Are You Reading

My Dear Miss Crisplock, I assure you that my comments insinuating Pratchet was dross, were made very much tongue in cheek. I am a fan of the man and his work and I do indeed recognise that the books have a significant layer of modern parable underlying the fantasy element of his creation.

Nah, you'll be fine. Just imagine you're Australian (remember to say Crikey a lot and poke venomous animals with sticks).

How do you apply your brimmed hat?

It's by the pinch from me too. This post needs to be a proper survey (after all who is going to collate this data?)

    Wearing a Fedora

Young man in a hat Thought I'd throw in a photo of a Young Man in a hat (and my son too) The boy tends to pull his down at the front so much that I'm amazed he can see when he walks. But it's his hat so he can wear it however he likes. If people ask about the hat he tells them he's Indiana...

    Josh Bernstein's hat

I just twigged to this bit, a mixed felt Akubra? Not a lot of beaver felt used in Australia (and as far as I know no one has ever tried to make a platapus felt hat). If it was an Akubra then it was rabbit but if it was mixed felt it wasn't an Akubra (am I right?)

    The Curse of Indiana Jones

I hate to complain (or tell you your job) but a paleontologist LOOKS for dino bones. Anyone can find them regardless of their profession (I have and I'm a librarian*) I've also found gold wait, perhaps I am in fact an archeologist (maybe you are a librarian and we got swapped at birth...)...

    History of the Fedora

Umm, movies from the 30s to the 60s with hats? ALL OF THEM every single one without exception, In fact it wasn't until 1971 when American law was altered to allow movie producers to show a hatless man in an outdoors closeup shot. French cinema of the 50s did sometimes show hatless men, but...

    Wearing a Fedora

Dare to be the one who brings back the hat Nah, no one here would think a 17 year old in a fedora looked weird. People out there in the real world might though. But they think we all look weird. It's not an age thing it's a hat thing, there are jut not as many hat wearers in the world today...

    Josh Bernstein's hat

closest match would be... So if the hat he wears is a custom version of his old Akubra, I'd say the closest Akubra in style would be the Silver Spur (Santone Fawn for the colour). It comes as an open crown hat so you can replicate his bash. The Snowy river is too cowboy and the cattleman has a...

    Felt hats in summer..

Australia is quite a large place, so the range of temperatures and humidity varies. Central Australia is dry almost 100% of the time. The East coast (where most Aussies Live) has very high humidity in summer. The Top End (Crocodile Dundee Country) doesn't have Summer and Winter it is...

    Felt hats in summer..

You're right, most Aussie hats are fur felt and they get worn all year round. That said, there is an appalling lack of hat wearing in Australia. Like America, most kids wear baseball style caps and most adults don't wear a hat at all. At least not around the cities. And the cities is where...

    What Are You Reading

Prices? Sir I commend to you, your local Publc Library. A fine institution, street corner universities (if you will) where one is able to find a heady mix of the old and the new (sometimes mixed in with the smell of the homeless, depending on your neighbourhood). No need to buy written words...

    What Are You Reading

I've just started Fear and Trembling by Soren Kierkegaard which is a little more serious than the Terry Pratchett which I have just finished. but as a librarian I am constantly tempted by books calling to me to read them so what I read is an eclectic mix.

Making myself known... Hello, I'm John, a librarian blessed by the Gods with a healthy dose of ADHD. I'm currently librarianing in Adelaide, South Australia (shallow grave capital of the world). I came to the lounge for the hats but am now branching out into the other threads. Need...
