So I finally got around to purchasing that Dorer's pure beaver hat. This past weekend I took the one and a half hour drive to Waco, Tx for a mountain biking day trip and scooped up the hat while I was in town. It was, as I suspected, an ex-western horse competition hat. My best guess is cutting...
Very nice hat. I've tried this on some of my taller crown westerns but haven't gotten it to look at that great. Any suggestions?

Saw a few forum posts on here and did some research from a magazine article about them. The hat is too good of a deal to pass up so I think I will purchase it. I like the real silk lining and we shall see how I like it. I have to drive a ways for it so I hoping the seller will hold it for me. If...
Anyone have any experience or info on Butch Dorer Hats. I have an opportunity to purchase a gently used pure beaver. From what I understand he only used pure beaver bodies. The one I'm looking at is an original pure beaver. It's more of a modern cowboy hat has a standard cattle and with a cutter...
I agree with your idea to use a wider hat band. I know for myself I usually do shapes that work well with lower crowns between 5-5.5" so when I do a minnick or a Canadian the band eats up some of the heighth and it makes it suitable for me. Maybe try putting a band on it then decide on a shape...
Maybe a horse hair band and would look good on it, that or a very wide ribbon that comes to the bottom on the indents that create the peak. I believe he sells his hats on etsy as well not sure I remember seeing very similar looking hats on there.

My crown creases depend on the brim width immensely. I like a very square and wide front, this is because I like the looks and on my working hats it keeps my ears from getting toasted. 4" and above is just as wide as my ears but 3.5" and 3.75" I usually go with a very wide from as shown on this...
@Latigo my favorite American (non grizzly at least) is my 20x in black. Just a classic black cowboy hat I wear for most formal events. My beater black hat is a Resistol Black gold. . I also really like the original yellow boxes Americans used to come in.

Just got done working on this rose colored round up, found it on Craigslist and got it done up for my girl. Added a blue jay feather just for kicks

Thanks Joao, I seem to keep going back to this crown crease it's called a "Minnick" from what I've seen it's a modified cattlemans crease.

So I got the ribbon done on that American grizzly. Had some help from my sweet girl because I have sausage fingers and it makes it hard to sew. I reshaped the crown because the arrowhead gave it a funny profile for me. May try it on another hat.

I'm just 90 miles north of Houston. See a lot of hats with Dons in the sweatband. Must've been quite the spot not sure if it's still around
