Wow! Yeah, thanks for "taking us along" on your tour. People who love what they do also love talking about it to anyone with a genuine interest, and it's really fun listening to them share their knowledge and experience. Sounds like a perfect confluence of events that you were there when he had...
Outback Outlet/Outback Trading has a bunch of hats which are wool felt, but they have a few which are described as "fur felt" without being more specific. I think the $15 hat is one of the fur felt ones. Just wondered if the hat might have a label with more specific info. I've seen some...
I got a BOTP last summer. Don't let the stiff brim dissuade you from reshaping it. I simply used a steam iron (with a heavy t-shirt as the buffer between iron and hat) to iron the brim dead-flat. Then I used tea-kettle steam to soften it up and add a slight curl on the sides and a slight dip in...
The only problem with hatsupply.com is their minimum order of $28 (+ shipping). That means having to buy 7 or 8 liners if you only need a couple.
I actually asked this question a while ago, and one of the hat-makers here at FL replied with a post saying he would sell liners, but then he...
Good morning! I'm in need of a few (3 or 4) spare/replacement satin liners. I wondered if any of the hat-makers/restorers here in the Lounge sell them separately..?
An online search turned up little or nothing. Same unsuccessful result from contacting various hat-makers via their websites...
Here's a Silver Spur I did for my wife. Other than the brim being too wide, the overall shape and proportions seem pretty close to the simple style of the Redford hat.
I'm figuring that 4.12" crown height spec describes the LT in its standard shape. Working with a half-dozen other hats and reshaping the crowns, I generally find that popping one back out to an open crown gains you at least an extra inch (or more) of height to work with. Is that enough to do...
Thanks, ShadedDude. That's useful to know.
RE: an earlier comment above, just how tapered IS the LT?
And do you think there's enough hat for a 4" or so telescope crown re-bash a la the Redford hat?
Thanks again :)
Will an Akubra Leisure Time brim hold a western curl?
For any Akubra Leisure Time owners out there: I'm thinking of ordering a black one, in order to turn it into something like Robert Redford wore in BUTCH CASSIDY, with just a slight upturn on the brim.
Do y'all think the LT brim is stiff...
I figured you'd enjoy seeing the finished product.
I even wore it last weekend for my first horseback ride in 25+ years (with a nice woven leather stampede string to keep it on my head).
Yes, please do post pics of your Adam Cartwright-inspired hat. :)
I love those old ads from the MAD MEN days where one pictures tells a story!
(I can just see Don Draper making a presentation to the client...)
I almost always wear a hat when walking my two Corgis.
ATT: Sam Craig...Heyes hatband follow-up
Hey, Sam. After our exchange about the ALIAS SMITH & JONES hatbands a couple of weeks ago, just thought I'd show you how the kit I ordered from the nice lady in Kentucky turned out. It took me about 90 minutes to put the thing together, not hard to do. I...
I have 5 Akubra westerns and a 4X Stetson, and I had the same issue: too stiff to wear comfortably when they arrived. So I followed the advice offered here and gently pummeled and crunched 'em while watching TV. I learned that good fur felt hats like Akubras can take quite a bit of abuse without...
Hi, Sam --
Even with remedial computer skills (that's me!), posting pics isn't hard to do. You don't even need to sign up for a specific photo-hosting site or account.
Just go to www.tinypic.com. Once there, you'll see a box inviting you to upload images and videos. Assuming your pics are...
