Thanks! Unfortunately some of the color was lost in scanning the prints - they're old. I was using a Nikomat (Japanese version of the US Nikkormat) and 35mm Ektachrome slide film.
I've been thinking about another train adventure - 1972. Backpacking across Japan with a fellow expat, we took the bullet train from Hiroshima to Kyoto, Japan. At that time it ran at about 130 kph - about 80 mph - and unbelievably smooth, and on time. As they've built out their lines, some...
My dad had a calico when I went overseas. It was crazy mean to me when I came home; actually attacking with claws out. I honestly did nothing to her. She took one smell and turned on me. Something in my smell or aura set her off. Unfortunately she survived another 10 years and ruined several...
What happened to the 115 colonists dropped off on Roanoke Island, VA in 1587? Gone when the ship returned in 1590 - essentially no trace.
BTW... the previously mentioned reality TV folks dug up a bunch of farm fields to prove conclusively nothing.
How much gas is wasted while waiting for red lights when there is no - zero - cross traffic.
I note that the newer Cadillacs have an ECO setting that seems to shut the engine off after a few seconds and restarts when you touch the gas. Having grown up in the carburetor era, it was even money...
My latest lighting acquisition through the Nashville Flea Market: a pair of vintage interior light fixtures (some suggest they're outside marker lamps) from a vintage Greyhound (GM) bus. I gently cleaned them and weather proofed both. I installed them on either side of my outside shed door...
When my wife and I were dating, we vacationed in the Florida Keys for a week of SCUBA diving. On a night dive about 3 miles out in about 30 feet, my light caught the glint of something gold under the reef. Turns out it was a gold wedding band - inscribed with a date two days earlier.
The dive...
We have a chain in Nashville called "Uncles". For all intents, they are a men's barbershop. The "barbers" are primarily cosmetologists ? who cut, style, and shave. It's not a sports bar-type shop and much better than the local quick clips or hair salons.
Interestingly, it wasn't till last year...
Sorry if I misunderstood the purpose of the thread... from the opening post in 2006, I thought a hat with a full brim (not a cap) that I've worn on 5 continents over 10+ years that is salt and water stained and keeps the sun off my bald spot qualified as my beater. I do wear it at the shore...
I started going down the path of scifi cover art and recalled a classic image that could only be effective with The Hat:
Consider these images side by side... the effect won't work without the hat - it creates the gap that our our minds fill in.
While not a classic, I picked this up in Alice Springs (long before the beard) and wear it all summer. It's great at the beach or for my annual dose of desert hiking.
I just came across about a dozen full sets of American Airlines 1st class china - no plastic - in a local antique store. Both the top and bottoms of the dishes had the AA logo. Better yet, they had vintage Pan Am china. I'll probably swing by and pick up a set of each.
Pictures to come.
I was looking for a vintage barn light and came across this beauty at the Nashville Flea Market last weekend. Its a vintage Crouse-Hinds explosion-proof fixture. I cleaned and rewired it this week and installed it in my shed. For $15 plus the cost of a 250W bulb, it's better than the retail...
I couldn't agree more! Unfortunately, fixing has been subverted by how easy it is to manufacture with glue or welds so the innards are not accessible.
I've been delighted with how willing my son-in-law (32 yo) has become to consider repair first, dispose second. He's been like a sponge in...
