    The 80s, myth and reality?

Funny, people think the re-enacting hobby really got rolling from the Centennial in the 1960s. That died off after 1965, and the modern era of re-enacting stated in the mid 1970s. I was a kid then and clearly remember people getting that going in the South. The re-enactment at Olustee, Florida...

    The 80s, myth and reality?

Yes. Anyone who collects US WW2 stuff from way back will remember the time when you collected that stuff because you couldn't afford the German stuff (which is what everyone in the hobby considered collectible). I could pretty much find anything I want and in almost any size, other than really...

    Your golden-era model railroads!

The Trackside online 'magazine' came out yesterday. I love the finished product: https://www.tracksidemodelrailroading.com/magazine/past-issues/2018-archive/jan-2018/ They put a lot of the video they shot on YouTube: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RHKCwwk9pRY...

    Your golden-era model railroads!

The Trackside Model Railroading magazine shoot went well on Saturday. They were there for about 5 hours and shot still/video the entire time (including a 360 video with a camera shaped like a soccer ball). I'm really looking forward to seeing the end results!

    Your golden-era model railroads!

I was lining up some trains for a magazine photo shoot on Saturday, and decided to put all three of my wartime-painted ten-wheelers for the first time since I weathered them over a year ago: And the other end...

    The 80s, myth and reality?

Just like in any era, people forget the bad stuff. There is the threat of nuclear war hanging over our heads. Everywhere you went, commercially, had a smoking and non-smoking section. Pretty much everyone dealt with second hand smoke everywhere they went. I like the music, and still do. Some of...

    Your golden-era model railroads!

Yep, 2017 has bene good to me in that regard. My model train work has bene featured three times' twice in an online magazine, and once as a feature article in the "On30 Annual" for 2017: http://on30annual.com/current-issue/. Oh, I also got a photo of my Dad's amazing 1/6 scale 14-pounder civil...

    Movie locations

I have been to Roslyn, WA a few times, where they filmed, "Northern Exposure" and it hasn't changed hardly at all in all those years. My dad was in the film, "Something Wild" and literally bumps into Jeff Daniels in a gas station. I just drove by there a few weeks ago and it doesn't look too...

You know you are getting old when:

I don't buy into a kid having to have a tough life. they just need to be able to adapt. That's what I had, I was raised in the sticks by folks who didn't have much money (and were kids during the depression). I didn't have it very tough at all, but I had to make do for almost everything. Hand me...

    What are you Writing?

I've written several articles for Army Motors and was a staffer for the UK-based WW2 re-enactor magazine which folded up I think about 2010? I wrote an article on my model train layout in this publication: http://on30annual.com/current-issue/ Another article should run in this magazine next...

    Your golden-era model railroads!

I finally got around to working on a GMC 2 ½ ton truck model I’d gotten off eBay a while back. They make them and only sell them in Europe, so finding one is really tough. I was lucky to get this one. I think it makes a good addition to the Army area on the layout as the GMC is a classic WW2...

    Your golden-era model railroads!

On Saturday, I had a show at a regional RR photography slideshow. People come from all over for this and my 11-minute show went first. But before that, they aired this word from their sponsor, which was met with huge laughs: Yesterday afternoon, I did a bunch of stuff to get the layout...

    Your golden-era model railroads!

I just completed a new article, which should be running in this magazine sometime in 2018: http://www.ngslgazette.com/ I wrote it in the context of finding a footlocker at a garage sale and finding a box of negatives at the bottom. Here are some castoff shots that didn't make the cut, as well as...

Army may bring back "Pinks and Greens"

Man, I SO hope they do this. Doesn't matter that enlisted soldiers didn't have pinks/greens back then, it's just a great look! I just wish they'd done this when I was still in (I got out as a Captain in 2006). I still have my greens in the closet, and oddly I hardly ever wore the things!

    Your golden-era model railroads!

Thank you very much. My room is only a 10X11 foot space, which is why I can devote so much detail. I'm at a point where the details are my primary goal and I'm enjoying this aspect more than any other during the time I built everything. I just looked it up. Really good work! I buy some of the...
