How would you earn a living?

To be honest, I once had a female mechanic, and as a fellow woman, she never spoke down to me and explained things clearly. The experience's I've had with male mechanics could fill a book. By far not all, but man, some of them were obnoxious. Like the time I drove my car in for an inspection...

    Show us your vintage home!

Awww... that is very sweet! Heading south was a huge decision, but I got a job opportunity I could not turn down. I live in the southern tier right now, but I grew up in the Adirondacks... much closer to Vermont in geography but also scenery. The move is a big one (I've never moved this far...

Cylinder would be my choice (that's what I had growing up)... but honestly it's a discussion with the household. Those are beautiful! Let me talk to my husband. We're moving right now (halfway across the country) but knowing you have inventory is a relief and a joy these things still exist!

So trivial, yet it really ticks you off.

This was before the Internet and social media really took off. A couple of the people I know from college are untraceable as far as the internet... if you aren't in a profession where they list you online, you don't have a landline, don't own property, specify your name be hidden on utilities...

You wouldn't happen to have any phonographs in cabinets for sale? That work? I'm looking for a cabinet "wind up" phonograph or one that fits in a cabinet. (I have a phonograph cabinet that is sort of like the ones my parents had when I was a kid, but I'd like one that actually has it's own...

So trivial, yet it really ticks you off.

Mental illness, particularly schizophrenia, is beyond challenging. A father's friend in high school had it; he'd linger between perfect clarity (rare) and nonsensical mumbling. Having had a lot of mental illness in my family and having volunteered at the nearby institution; I can fully say that...

JC Penney Might Be Going Belly Up (Along With Sears)

There's a few things I can only find at Pennies (notably slips) so it looks like I need to make a run before the local one closes. Boo.

This is why you have a second helping of dessert. Make it harder for them to carry you off!

No, it was very real, unfortunately. Her boyfriend was from the same city as my then boyfriend (now husband). To be honest, I was always a bit worried about her mental health. She didn't have a good upbringing and had some after effects from it. Her grandmother had also had severe mental...

So trivial, yet it really ticks you off.

I have no idea, unfortunately. She spoke once of changing her name, but I'd have no idea what she picked if she did. When I knew her she was untraceable... she didn't have an entry in the university directory and her email wasn't even reverse searchable... which is the highest level of security...

So trivial, yet it really ticks you off.

I had a friend of a friend in college that needed a job. She was estranged from her family and I felt sorry for her. I struggled in college and my family life wasn't good growing up, so I knew of a temp job and I hooked her up. I had a very stable full time job while in school. (Her mother had...

If you had a conversation with a person in 1770 would they understand?

I'm a sucker for old houses. Abandoned ones especially. I'm not wise with my money in this respect. Husband has said no more abandoned homes, we've owned 2. He won't even let me stop the car when I see one now. I don't blame him, I've gotten sick of living without to save $500 so you can do...

Here you can buy a trailer lot for about $5,000 ($20,000 buys a nice large lot, multiple acres), a well is $10,000 (max), and a septic is $5,000. That's a new house for $50,000. Comparatively, it's $12,000 a year to rent a decent 2 bedroom apartment/ house here. You can own in about 5 years...

There's something to be said about the pictures of the pilgrims meeting the American Indian nation reps (these of course being fantastical images thought up by later generations). The pilgrim is often pictured holding a bible in one hand and a gun in the other. (Think of the Saturday Evening...

You Know You Live in a Small(ish) Town When...

My great uncle was like this. He was wounded in his leg in one of the last battles in the Pacific and it never healed (having joined the navy and been at Pearl Harbor). He lived in an old house with a wood stove. Towards the end he was in a wheelchair and still chopped his own wood. When the...

shower remodel - shower head help

That is excellent! Not to be morbid, but a fall often is the first step in a decline that leads to death or serious disability. Preventing falls extends life. Sadly most people have an attitude that they will add the bars when the need them. By then they've had a fall, and a certain percentage...

You Know You Live in a Small(ish) Town When...

...when you're new to town, people come up to you and say, "hey you're so and so" complete with a biography and your address. You have no clue who they are. This repeats itself until you've encountered everyone in town. ... when you have a nickname/ tagline (hopefully flattering) used by...

Yes. I've seen it twice. Although one was a posh place and they had named swans that swam on the fenced pond in the middle of the town, not ducks. I didn't live there, but when the eggs were smashed one year, it made the cover of the daily paper... with the swan parents called by name.

We don't do the twinning thing... some places have "sister" cities, but not small ones. I've never seen a soapbox derby. Another one: ...when the parade consists of 5 tractors driven right out of their field. ... when Santa rides a tractor in the Christmas parade. ...when your potential...
