Ebay Hats: Victories, Defeats, Gripes & Items of Interest

Thanks guys. I can see how this hat bug get's to a person. I wore modern westerns for so long I didn't know anything about felt quality. When I inherited a couple vintage Open Roads a couple years ago I got more interested in it. Now that I've been wearing fedoras for about a year I've found...

    The Conversion Corral

Thanks RBH. I am humbled by some of the beautiful conversions on this post. I'll be doing a LOT of this in the future because used high quality westerns are plentiful where I am. Maybe I'll raise my game to the level of some of these other posters. The main thing is that I had fun doing it.

    The Conversion Corral

More Conversion Progress Well, I went ahead and figured out how I needed to go abot cutting the brim down. I cut an 8'' hole in a piece of paneling that the crown would fit through. I stapled the brim to the wood and made my mark (2 5/8'' front and back 2 3/8'' sides). I then made my cut with a...

    Ancestor hat pics

I looked at some military uniform sites and they wore them like this for 100 years up until about 1910. This one definitely looks older and could be from VMI instead of West Point. Very cool picture either way.

    Stetson crest dating

I hate to post a question until I just absolutely can't find it myself. I have fun searching around. You get led in a million directions and learn things you never even expected. Thanks again.

    Stetson crest dating

Thank yall so much. I've been researching this for about 8 hours. I know the picture was originally painted by Lon Magargee in 1923 and used in Stetson ads from 1924. The hat I bought today has a very nice embroidered liner but there's a lot of sweat staining and wear where it rides under the...

    Stetson crest dating

What year did they begin putting "The last drop from my Stetson" in the OR's? I know you can still get new ones with that picture but not the quality of embroidery.

What Hat Are You Wearing Today 1?

With all the family in town over the holidays of course they all had to try on hats. My lovely bride even put on my Stetson Temple My nephew in an old family hat. This hat (Resistol Open Country) belonged to my aunt's (by marriage) grandpa who died in the late 60's. This is exactly how...

    The Conversion Corral

Inspired to Try a Conversion I've had the conversion bug for a while but all my western hats have too much sentimental value for me to alter. I talked my wife into going into a junk store and lo and behold there's an oldish Stetson 3X Beaver for $10. As bought (does anybody need a feather...

Ask a question, get an answer

The other kind of crease I left my vintage Resistol Wide Country on the couch in my guest room and my 110 lbs lab slept on top of it all night. The crown has a noticeable set of creases now. Will steaming it thoroughly help get these out? I guess it wouldn't hurt. That's the last time my...

    The Resistol Roundup

I asked an elderly relative of mine if she might have any of her husbands old hats and she said "No, I threw them all out but I do have one of my dads". I drove right over to her house and she presented me with this one. She said he moved near Texarkana in the mid 60's so this is probably...

Ebay Hats: Victories, Defeats, Gripes & Items of Interest

Actually one of them was a stingy! I guess I'll just have to find other sources for my vintage hats. I know that just asking the elderly members of my family has been my best source. Maybe I'll start attending bridge club meetings or something:)
