It's okay, Cheekys. It's only human nature that you forgot about the archives and not actually dangerous. I'm sure everyone knows you don't wanna be startin' something like some kind of smooth criminal. Since you were able to look at the man in the mirror for the cause of that oversight, we...
You're right, it's no kindness contest at all. :) I've resoaked and given it more of a fedora crease. I'm inspired to go ahead and make myself a block to do it up right.
Thanks so much, CRH! Yeah. I'm thinking the crown could use a couple of tweaks here and there. This stiff cowboy felt has a stubborn memory, though. Looks like more soaking is in order!
5X Stetson
Okay. Here's my first official conversion (I'm not counting a cheap costume hat I played with a couple of years ago.) This is a 5x Stetson I picked up on the Bay about a week ago. It initially looked like this:
First I filled the crown about 3/4 full with distilled water and...
This Stetson 5X Gus just arrived today. I picked it up on the Bay and I'll be converting it tonight after work or tomorrow. I'll post the results in the Conversion Corral. Meanwhile, this is what it looked like out of the box.
He rode a blazing saddle!!!
AH! That's what I was thinking might work. Thanks so much, Stoney!
BTW, I didn't end up with that tall brown Stetson after all. I just won a black Stetson that I still intend to convert from a Gus crowned Western into a fedora I might wear more regularly. Pics when the hat arrives.
Just last night I removed the lining from my Akubra Fed IV. I want to hang on to it, since the logo is beautiful. In the hat, however, the lining started to sag down from the top (the glue on the top had come loose) and just made the hat hotter. In Texas, hotter is not necessarily what you're...
Hmmm... Good to know. I may be better off just taking the time to craft one myself.
More good information. I'll try to MacGuyver up a block and flange at some point and let folks here know how it works. Thanks a bunch! Since I'm only looking for an open crown block and flat brim flange...
Thanks, Stoney. I looked through the forum, and found things about how people made or modified their own hats but not a lot of details. I'll have to keep looking and hope I get lucky.
Thanks for the link to the book. That may be the perfect place for me to start. I learn most of my DIY...
No problem. You're not a dummy. This process isn't necessarily intuitive. I've written procedures at different jobs in that step-by-step way, so I thought it might help. The hat's looking nice, by the way!
A couple of my friends just showed up to take me to dinner for my birthday (it was last week, but they're from out of town.) It's a casual thing, so I'm wearing a tshirt, white guayabera, and my Panama.
Yeah, you're right. I just had this ridiculous idea that removing that beautiful Akubra logoed liner would somehow "mess up" my lovely new hat. This after having spent the last year teaching my girlfriend that just because something comes from the factory a certain way, doesn't mean it has to...
