Thanks, all. I've been wearing the hat today and while I haven't noticed any temperature differences, it really is nice to not have a droopy liner on my scalp, or sagging out of the hat when I doff it.
I always cut the plastic bit out, but my other liners are well behaved, stay in place and...
In a fit of pique, I just yanked the liner out of my Fed IV Deluxe. (It kept sticking to my head and flopping around). Liners in my other hats are fine and seen to stay in place.
Are there potential negative consequences to this action? Does the fact that I'm bald as a cue ball bode ill or...
The storms here in SoCal have been freaking me out, since I've twice before had my house destroyed by floods (two "hundred-year, once-in-a-lifetime" events within seven years). Fortunately, neither rain, nor sleet, etc. stays these couriers from their appointed rounds, so this came in the mail...
I live in a community of such eccentric - and self obsessed - characters that people rarely comment on my hats. About a year ago, I was photographing a community theater rehearsal for publicity shots, and a guest actor snidely commented on my Fed IV:
"Did you borrow that from Indiana Jones?"...
The Process Continues
Thanks for recommending a western wear shop. Sure enough, The Wharf in Ventura took great care of me, and here's the next step in the ongoing conversion of my cowboy hat:
They took 3/4 inch off the brim, sanded the edge, and charged me nothing. I previously bought my...
Well, if you're referring to mine above, I think of it as a work-in-progress; a rebash on its way to being a conversion, once I pluck up the nerve to trim the brim...
Brimming Over
Thanks for all the encouragement. Still trying to rework this hat without trimming the brim, but now my wife is making a lot of flying nun cracks...
semi-conversion
I guess this is more rebash than conversion, because I just haven't gotten up the guts to trim the brim. In fact, with my big ears, I sort of like this fedora crown with cowboy brim thing. Maybe I'll just declare it a new style.

This was a great hat year for me. For Christmas of 2008 I got a Fed IV Deluxe, and spent most of 2009 reshaping it until I wore out the felt at the front of the crown - but I still love it and it kept me warm in a mid-spring Montana snowstorm. I got an Akubra Stylemaster in February, and you can...
OR Makes the Man(liness)
Forgive my gushing pride, but I did an interview over at The Art of Manliness, and they used a nice photo of my OR. Yeah!

Thanks. Not vintage. I bought it at the beginning of summer and I'm still "breaking it in." I don't know if this is true of vintage ORs, but on this one, the stitching of the ribbon allows sweat to pour through the felt. After about two minutes on a hot day, the front of the hat around the...
I love all of my hats, but this has been the summer of the Open Road. I'm still breaking it in, and savoring the process. I was photographing a play rehearsal last month and became aware of the costume designer staring at me while I worked. I stopped and looked at her. She said, a bit...
I had a few minutes tonight to experiment with how to light portraits of people wearing hats. I'll need to work light locations and ratios more, and I think I'll be able to do this much better when they're not self-portraits. I'm looking forward to figuring this out. This also shows me that I...
I'm wearing a new OR with the cattleman's crease and front snapped way low. I like all my hats, but this seems to be my most interesting hat. People notice that it's not quite a cowboy hat, and it's not quite a fedora. So what is it? It's MY hat... ;-)
Here's a picture with it's western...
