    Living in the past

Well, given the option, I'd say nobody wants to do anything at the lower end of the scale. At the end of the day, there's not a "right" nor "wrong" way (which are obviously subjective words) to do anything. Just gotta do what you do, do what makes you, you.

    Living in the past

I suppose I'll take another stab at being definitive, both within and beyond this thread; hopefully this'll sum it all up: Something's worth what someone will pay for it. Again, not trying to distract from the topic at hand, which is the fact that this guy is totally awesome!

    Living in the past

Well, I don't suppose it's inherently "wrong" to discuss it, but there's no interest in it, so why would I? I don't care how much he spent on the shoes (or anything else), so why waste any of my precious time discussing price?

The Great Gatsby - Remake in the Works

Exactly! I'm not looking for accuracy in it, just something really really fun! I'm laughing, but I know "it is what it is," and I'm laughing with it.

The Great Gatsby - Remake in the Works

I was Brooks Brother faithful before, but now I may never go anywhere else! Until this thread started, I never knew there was so much hate for Moulin Rouge! When it first came out, I was a little young for it, so my friends and I didn't get around to watching it until last Summer, and we...

    Living in the past

My, my, what have I kicked off here! I had no idea this thread would explode in a few days, and now that it has I realize I wasn't as articulate as I should've been in my first post. What I was exalting was consumerism, not conspicuous consumption. I definitely DO NOT encourage buying...

    Art Deco Society of California

Looks heavenly! Is there any similar sort of event hosted in the South of California as well?

Even if he is expressing "consumerist ways," why would anyone denounce this as a bad thing? The free market is based on consumers; consumption is the lifeblood. Make no mistake, it's consumers that drive the economy, not producers. Even if buying fancy things - vintage or contemporary - is...

    Vintage lighting:

At home we have can lights all over, and I didn't notice how much of a difference it made to use lamps instead of the in-ceiling lights until I was probably fifteen years old. Can lights provide a bland, uniform illumination. In some video games, there is an option to use "global lighting"...

The Great Gatsby - Remake in the Works

To be honest, I didn't when I went in. I was home for Christmas, and my folks gave a choice between The Descendants and The Artist. This was way before it got as big as it did, I actually knew nothing about it at the time. I had heard of Descendants and didn't really want to see it. The...

The Great Gatsby - Remake in the Works

Seriously? Is that even possible? I literally cannot imagine what a conversation with one of these people [regarding their walkout] would entail...hearing this statement to me is equivalent to two plus two suddenly equaling five, it's just not comprehensible. That is so cool.

The Great Gatsby - Remake in the Works

Interesting choices, as these are some of my favourite actors! But that ain't what I'm here to talk about. I, for one, am THRILLED about this trailer. Adapting Gatsby has been attempted several times, yet none has ever come to be seen as "the definitive" version. I've been excited about...

Electro-Swing or: How I Learned to Stop Complaining and Love Modernity

I will definitely agree with you on that, it's a complaint of mine as well. But that's the thing I love about this world: there's enough music in it to choose a lifetime's worth of what you like. I'd rather live in a reality where we can be musical gluttons than one where we starve from lack...

    Frank Buchwald's Machine Lights

My god these are gorgeous. I must fill my apartment with them. (Edit: that was supposed to have the drama of being in all capitals, but it didn't post that way. Just imagine it did.)

    Vintage lighting:

I'm rather surprised that this thread is not much bigger than it is; I'd argue that lamps are the most visible (pun not intended) of all electrical inventions, rather the ability to illuminate is what separates us from the previous form of existence wherein you got up and went to bed primarily...

Electro-Swing or: How I Learned to Stop Complaining and Love Modernity

Glad to see this is getting a lot of attention. I had no intent of starting any arguments when I posted this, and it looks like everyone's been able to keep their hats on. I'm also not trying to posit it as "better," necessarily, than any of the swing styles it references or swing songs it...

    Lucky Strikes

Unfortunately, the 7-11 and petrol stations right out front of the dorm don't carry Luckies, but a cafe less than a half mile up the street carries 'em. By far the best cigarettes I've ever had, even than these ones a friend of mine down the hall hand-rolls. I'm amazed they aren't carried in...

Electro-Swing or: How I Learned to Stop Complaining and Love Modernity

This literally changed my life; it's some of the best music I have ever heard. There's a new style rapidly gaining popularity right now known as ELECTRO-SWING that's just making inroads to the mainstream, but it's about ready to explode. Imagine samples (and in some cases even original...

    Young loungers

As one other poster said, he's more of an infrequent contributor than a lurker. I'd describe myself the same way, very infrequent. I discovered the site back in freshman year (now a 21-year-old third-year at university), and am just enamoured with it. A lot of the interest probably came with...
