No, I am British - I can't let my Akubras distress naturally because I don't live in an environment where wearing Akubra is appropriate. I would look a bit strange wearing a bush hat in London. But most of my family have migrated to Australia and I have been there many times. I saw so many...
Fmw: although I do like the look of a pristine hat, having been to Australia and seen the character of some of the beaten up Akubras, I really wanted an authentic looking hat. I'm just not capable of allowing it to distress naturally. I always straighten out the creases that don't fit my ideal...
I did all of those things, I worked on a few farms in Queensland (Gatton and then later Bowen) and my dirt-covered hands left a great natural-looking pair of marks on the pinch but I didn't wear it long enough in the "red centre" for the bull dust to collect on the outside. I think I'll take...
As any Australian bushman will tell you, an Akubra looks best when it's well worn. Unlike the USA where cowboys always have at least one hat in pristine condition, it's somewhat of a petty crime to wear an Akubra in mint condition in the Australian bush. I know because I went backpacking in my...
What? People walk around with the sleeve tag still attached? I've never seen that before.
Personally I don't like the look of a suit which looks loose and boxy. It reminds me of our politicians who walk around with their tie down to their thighs. I personally don't really care too much about...
Alan I love that fedora, it really has a classic shape. And either that one is brand new or you've kept it in great shape - the brim looks so neat, no kinks. I'm really particular with "smart" hats as opposed to bush hats which must look worn. I don't like even the slightest kink in my...
I wear fur felt in all weather - we had 102 digrees in London in 2006 and I wore my Akubra all the time. They really mold to your head in that temp. JUst don't leave your hat in the car or direct sunlight unless you're wearing it - it'll shrink.
I'm lucky, my missus encourages me to follow my passion for hats. She even bought my Lock & Co "Madison" which didn't come cheap. If you need to change something about your spouse, they're not the one for you. Johnny: either ditch the hats along with your independence, dignity and style OR ditch...
Ha ha ha.
Nice bash and to be honest I'm thinking of trimming my brim down as well. The dimensional cut doesn't work well with a turn. The reason I turned it is because I love the way it makes the brim curl upwards. But the dimensional cut makes the brim appear wider if I turn my head to the...
Great thread. I really wanna take a couple more pictures of Lock & Co because although we have some lovely pictures of it already, there are a couple of little details which I think you would all find quite interesting.
Thanks, I totally agree with everything you all said. A tight pinch is too much for a homburg but two dents looks classy. Mayserwegener: thanks for the pics they look gorgeous. The bow on the P & C Habig looks fantastic. Now that you mention pre-blocked dents I've just remembered even Lock & Co...
Thanks Wise Hatter for the screen grabs. I know a homburg isn't supposed to have a pinch but I think it often works well. I have no problem wearing a homburg either way but here in England the traditionalists sometimes like to "advise" me the pinch isn't correct. I don't care - a lot of people...
Thanks Bowlerman, it's just folded and stitched. I have another black homburg which I wanted to post pics of but it has no lining and the sweat band has disintegrated. It has a narrower brim and smaller crown shape. I'll take it to Lock & Co for repairing and I'll post the pics when it's done.
Ok I've used my own trusty kettle and it loosened up just fine. It's a PERFECT fit now - yes I'm a long oval too Mayserwegener and it just needed lengthening. It fits so well now. I was a bit worried it was too small but I knew from personal experience that big gaps down the side allow for a lot...
