I've sort of asked about this before. It must have done strange things to one to have been crew of a German bomber over Britain, when the USAAF and RAF came and did it again to you, and to yours.
One of those questions that comes to you while staring out the window doing the washing up.
Did "Austrians" and "Germans" serve in separate units during the Second World War, or was it assumed that the two nationalities where one, and thus served together?
Were there "Austrian" only units?
As a Brit I know the quote "Freedom of Speech does not mean the freedom to shout "Fire" in a crowded theatre".
I've come across another today, even more useful in this day and age: "The freedom to swing one's arms ends where the other man's nose begins".
How influential in terms of law...
I'm a fan, as I find the books as very atmospheric. I can follow Maigret around Paris quite easily.
My partner, though has never read one.
Any idea of which one would be the best to get (I don't own any at home)?
Something baased in Paris, and very noir, please.
I don't know whether I count as am "amateur", as I don't get paid, or a "professional" as I've been at it for over a quarter of a century, here in the UK.
What I do know is that different groups have different characters. I have been "viking" for all that time and know they do things in a...
Edward: You didn't say what nationality your teacher was. As if that makes a difference, which it doesn't.
I wondered how someone who had partici[pated in the "Coventrising" (if that's the right word) would feel when the boot might be seen to be on the other foot.
A thought that has been wandering through my head of late is this; What where the feelings of German bomber crews (no less brave than their US & UK counterparts) as German cities were bombed.
It was known that the British included revenge as one of their reasons for doing this.
The Home Guard included people who had served in the International Brigades, black-listed as "premature Anti-fascists".
From all accounts these HG/IB units were very effective, and some saw action in France, having been intergrated into the Army.
I'll probably also put this on the Connoseurs thread as well, but...........
I have been wondering what spices were availible on Britain during the War.
I would imagine that the free-Czecks, and Poles might want various spices, plus Indian army, and so forth.
Does anyone have any idea...
A "Flying Legends" story. Well sort of.
Opposite Duxford across the M11 is Audley End house and gardens. Many years ago (20-ish) there occured the first multi-period re-enactment. I was there with the Vikings. But there were many others, including a large WWII contingent.
One of the...
Dear Leon
It has occured to me that we might have met.
Did you do an event at the Maldon Museum of Power some years ago, when there was an English Civil War group there? And did you have a jeep?
Yo! Leon
I was intending to use the British kit, but the group we mob around with do 30 Commando (RN) for D-Day so I may well go for the post North-African US uniforms.
But I might not.
I am down in the West Country, in the UK. Where are you?
All the best
For those in the know that means The "Allied" unit of the French Foriegn Legion in WWII.
I am hoping to begin re-enacting the unit, and I am fairly clear on the kit, and the history of the unit, but I am still a bit unsure on a few facts.
So perhaps you chaps and Ladies could assist...
