Very nice tweed cap for fall, with an unusual crosshatched weave. From the labeling, I would say this one dates from the 30's or 40's.The brand states "Wings Headwear" and the tag states size as 7 1/4 - this is my size and it fits true to the label. The wool and the brim are in excellent...
"Not necessarily, Sir. I am told that Mr. Freddie 'He's a Riot' Flowerdew often appears on the music hall stage in comparable attire." (Jeeves & Wooster, "The Golf Tournament")
Heyyyy - I resemble that remark! Back when I had hair and a moustache some folks said I looked like Teddy Roosevelt and some said I looked like the middle aged Ernest Hemingway....but a lot of people say Churchill now - I think it is the bald head, stocky build and suits - I don't think my face...
HBK - You have got the "period" look naturally - in black & white, your physique and face could fall right in with any number of 1920's-40's photos. I would also say a lot of folks looked a bit pale and worn - the city dwellers and office workers, anyhow.
Thank'ee kindly! That is about the heaviest suit I have ever owned - I ordered a few yards of Irish thornproof tweed while I was stationed in Afghanistan - the suit was made for about $80 by A. Seddiqi of Kabul. The cap is courtesy of Mr. Johnny Cordova, the shoes are new Grenson country...
In response to several posts I have seen from folks seeking ties in tartan, here are 3 I think must have been made by Lochcarron or some similar firm that caters to the various tartan museums, Highland games, etc. All are modern ties in modern length (54"x3"). All are free from holes, picks...
I also remember a place in Linville, NC (near Grandfather Mountain, Appalachian State University, etc) called "Everything Scottish" - not sure if it is still there - was last in Linville around 15 years ago.
There is also "Celtic Ways" - small shop on Wall Street in Asheville, NC (behind the Flatiron Building). The little old lady who has run it for past 30 years is a mite snooty and they keep odd hours but they have a huge selection of ties - also hats, caps, sweaters, and other clothing.
Here is one of the best pairs of autumn shoes I have ever owned. These cap toed brogues in a rich brown that I believe is called "chestnut" are made by renowned English maker, Alan McAfee - I am not certain of the date - I would say old enough to be actually made by the McAfee firm, but either...
Thanks Mate! I actually stole it myself - read an article in an airline magazine years ago about the modern wine industry in Italy, and the 80 year old vineyard owner they interviewed was wearing a similar outfit - cap, tartan tie and all!!
You, my friend, must be a tie expert! I honestly did not know until I looked at the label - it is indeed a tie by Botany, and is labeled as "Fraser Hunting" tartan!
One of the Luxire spear-point collar shirts, with custom pocket treatment, that I ordered awhile back, with one of Johnny J's caps in forest green herringbone wool.
But for the toe cap and smooth finish, I would've said they were either British or Canadian ammunition boots - I think the Aussies wore brown ones for a long time...
