Hi,
My WWII vet dad would never wear a hat other than a straw hat when working outdoors. He'd rarely wear a suit other than to weddings and funerals, either.
He always said that he'd had enough of suits and hats in the Army!
Anyway, I can see where this would have likely been a trend...
Hi,
I have one vintage Stetson that's an Open Road, but does not have that name stamped on the sweatband. It's a Panama version.
It does have a couple different Stetson logos and even 'Genuine Panama' stamped on the sweatband, but not the Open Road name itself.
It does have a tag...
Hi again,
Any thoughts on my idea that perhaps the higher-level, unstamped, OR-looking Stetsons were sold open crown and so they'd not get the OR name since that requires a cattleman's crease from the factory?

Hi,
Yep. Lots of people call every motorcycle, cruiser or not, that they see a 'Harley'. Not everyone, of course, but I do hear it a lot. I ride a 1981 Honda Goldwing, which actually looks *nothing* like a cruiser. It has a water-cooled, opposing 4-cyl (boxer) engine and one rides it in an...
Hi,
Well, the chemo baldness is only temporary. My wife went quite bald on chemo (what a mess, as it all came out at once, in the shower, and talk about a hair clog) and it came back like it was before.
It's genetics. My family has no hair trouble, and eveyone keeps their full head of hair...
You are not alone
Hi,
I'm with you. I call 'em an Open Road if they have the matching thin ribbon and edge binding. That's enough for me. Heck, I call 'em OR even if they're not Stetson brand. I have a couple Resistol branded copies and I refer to those as 'Resistol Open Roads' as opposed...
Yep
Hi,
I'm quite new to this world, and I've manged to figure out that there's lots and lots and lots and lots (do I gots enough lots or do I need more?? - Ha!) of variation on the theme here.
I think the best you're going to get is what each of us likes best.
Me, I'd say a 2 5/8" to...
We each have two
Hi,
My wife and I each have two such rooms.
Both of mine are garages. The 28x20 one attached to the house holds my electronics shop: Racks full of ham radio gear and enough test equipment to qualify as an R&D lab. ;)
The other is a real working garage, as opposed to a...
Hi,
I ride a 1981 Honda GL1100 Goldwing - naked except for the travel trunk. Oh, I have both saddlebags, but usually don't need them so they stay home unless I'm taking a long trip.
I carry a lot of tools and odd parts (spare control cables, light bulbs, etc) and extra riding gear in the...
Machine Shop time
Hi,
They need to take one needle to a protyping machine shop - the kind where they still make things mostly by hand - not to one of the production style shops where they want to make 10,000 pieces minimum.
A decent machinist can make what they need easily enough. My dad...
Oh, I forgot....
Hi,
I drove to work this morning in a 1990 Ford station wagon, while wearing a Milan straw fedora. Any hat I have wears fine in that car. It has the lowest roofline of anything we have - except for the Lotus, that is.
Parked next to the wife's new 08 Escape, the roof on...
Hi,
Well, I can see where this would be a factor today. However....
I don't think you can figure that cars had much to do with the decline of hats in the first place, at least here in the US. Cars didn't downsize until the early 1970's. I've always been able to wear a hat in a vehicle...
Hi,
Well, I'm here liking my teeny 7 1/8 head quite a bit in light of the list! Actually, it's even teenier, at 7 1/16 so I get a choice between going for size 7 and stretching it a half-size or a 7 1/8 and padding it a little. :D
I have a list of hat numbers; I'm just waiting for them to...
Whew!
Hi,
I was thinking of Art on and off here, coming in every hour or two to see if there was an update. I'm so glad that things went smoothly there.

Hi,
I'd be thrilled to have a store within a hundred miles where I could go and feel for myself the difference between the number of X's within a brand and type of hat as well as across brands and types!
As it is, there's a western wear store that had a few new Open Roads to check out, and...
Hi,
Well.....this question will garner as many answers as there are responders, I think! lol
In the end, it's going to come down to the rest of the wardrobe as to what folks have in the way of hats.
In my case it's pretty simple.
I have one, count 'em, one suit. It's brown. It's...
Thanks!
Hi,
I was unaware of this, even though I've been looking for months. I get to Charlotte from time-to-time as it's the regional racing center due to all the support outfits that also deal with the big-time stock car crowd. Next time I'm down there, I'll make sure that I take some...
Welcome Back!
Hi,
Firstly, a 'welcome back!' to Hatco. I haven't been here long, only since February. In reading the 'back issues', though I thought it was grand to have Hatco (the person) around, and then I felt somehow sad when I figured out he hadn't been around in a while.
No matter...
Hi,
You and me both!
A century long decline. I never thought it went on for so long. I really thought it was a post-WWII thing. Must be due to all the movies always showing everyone wearing hats until the late 1950's / early 1960's....
Well, I always say that for a day to truly be a...
Yeah, what he said!
Hi,
Mostly, I feel hotter or cooler, depending on the time of year. In the winter, a felt hat keeps heat from escaping so rapidly from my head, so I feel warmer. Without a hat, I feel much colder.
In the summer, I feel cooler as a straw hat keeps the sun from...
