    galoshes !

Crockett & Jones makes a classic ladies Balmoral boot. The design has remained constant for at least 100 years. Pricey, but lovely.

    Pocketwatches

The ways that I know: 1) T-bar through the lapel buttonhole, pocket watch in breast pocket. 2) Chain clipped to belt loop, watch in special trouser watch pocket beneath trouser waistband. 3) Chain clipped to belt loop, watch in trouser side pocket. 4) Chain cliped to vest button...

Twilight Zone Marathon on SciFi Channel

I'm glad the show is still on TV with SciFi, and yet ... They have it on at atrocious hours. The marathons are only twice a year. And they cut out little "irrelevant" parts to make way for commercials. On TV in my youth, you could see the entire epsiodes, as originally aired. Seeing the...

    Overdressed for a funeral

For me, it's always a charocal gray suit (3 piece with DB vest), white shirt, black grenadine tie, and black punch cap shoes or boots (depending on the weather). Every funeral I've ever been to had its share of ill dressed people, but I've never felt uncomfortable or like I'm upstaging anyone...

Twilight Zone Marathon on SciFi Channel

First one I ever saw. When I was a kid, before the ubiquity of cable, classic shows were syndicated on UHF stations that had no network. TZ was on at 11, as I recall, so I could only watch in summer. I remember well being blown away by any episode with a trick ending, in particular "To...

Twilight Zone Marathon on SciFi Channel

On Zicree, I have both editions, and there's not much new in the second. I like the book more than posters here do, though. On the DVDs of the show, they use Zicree's original taped interviews (for the book) in the '70s as commentary tracks. Some of them are interesting. The best...

Twilight Zone Marathon on SciFi Channel

Burgess Meredith as a bank teller who breaks his glasses is called "Time Enough At Last." His name was Henry Bemis. "Mr. Bevis" starred Orson Bean as a lovable loser whose guardian angle tries to imrpove his life.

Cary Grant's Jacket - What Kind is it?

Grant is wearing a Ghillie collar coat, which both James Laver and Hardy Amies claim is the direct ancestor of the modern SB notch lapel jacket.

    Summer Weight Silk Suits

I can't wear silk in summer, no matter how light weight. The insulating properties of the fiber just trap heat and boil me alive.

    The Spectacular SS Normandie

France is lost, I am convinced. It would be impossible to tow QM around the Horn, and unbelievably expensive to re-engine her, so she is either going to survive in SoCal or not survive at all.

    Milanese Cuffs

I don't know why they call that Milanese, as not only have I never seen it in Milan, I haven't even seen it offered by the major Milanese shirtmakers.

    Pinstripes - how bold?

A worsted chalk stripe. Much less "fuzzy" than the flannel. The slight fuzz effect is achieved by pairing two parallel broken stripes in side by side warp yarns. Up close, it looks like a dentation pattern.

    Pinstripes - how bold?

A rope stripe is a specific pattern of short diagonal lines that look like the braiding of a rope. A chalk stripe is a thick, solid, fuzzy stripe. Sloppy pressing.

    Pinstripes - how bold?

Not to get too picky here, but "pinstripe" refers to a specific design that by definition is not that bold. A really bold stripe would be a chalk stripe or a rope stripe. Chalk:

    Show us your suits

Tip Top had several sharkskins the last time I was there (about two months ago, I think), but none with a sheen quite like that.

    The Spectacular SS Normandie

Harvey Ardman went through the record with numbing thoroughness. He concludes it was an accident. John Maxtone-Graham believes the same thing. There have been theories floating around forever, some even involving supposed Nazi agents, but so far as I know nothing has ever been...

    The Spectacular SS Normandie

40 years is a good run for a ship like that. QE2 took much more of a beating over the course of her life than those big slabs that prowl the Carribean. Still, I wonder about the economics of this plan. Are people in Dubai really going to care that much? Will people travel to Dubai just to...

    The Spectacular SS Normandie

Not sure, but is this a reference to supposed mafia involvment in the fire? Because that has been pretty thoroughly debunked.
