I think the current price you are offering is a fine start point for negotiations. If it wasn't for the terrible exchange rate at the moment (I live in Canada), I would have made an offer. I'm still thinking about it.
I had a similar problem with a modern hat purchase. I simply pulled the stitch out and restitched it. I'm also considering redoing the stitching on some of my other hats so they are less obvious.
The value of something is what someone is willing to pay in light of the conditions of a prospective purchase. To state a value (as a seller or a buyer) as 'fair' or 'reasonable' or to state an opposing comment is simply a vague speculative valuation on the part of the person and nothing more...

I find that I sometimes forget about the hat until someone approaches me about it. At least once per week, I receive a compliment on what I wear and on many occasions it sparks an interest for someone else to get a hat.
