Vintage things that have REAPPEARED in your lifetime?

My mom and I had a farmer's market stand in the early 90s that specialized in heirloom tomatoes. People called her "the old tomato lady" lol. They were quite unusual where we were, at least. My favorite customers were the elderly folks who hadn't had a tomato like that since they were kids!

Have You Ever Met A Movie/TV Star or Celebrity?

I enjoy listening to Paula on "Wait,Wait, Don't Tell Me" and am very glad to hear she is as nice and genuine as she seems.

Vintage Things That Will NOT Disappear In Your Lifetime

Well, that inspires me. I'm going to see if I can pull off red lipstick. My mother always said you need to wait until you're over 30 for red lipstick. THAT particular mile marker was passed by some time ago (ahem) so perhaps it's time.

What's the best modern electric tool you use for your vintage hair styles.

It's not electric but I just bought myself a Denman brush from Sally's. I'd heard it was the bee's knees for wet sets and it's pretty fantastic. Works well on tangly children's hair as well. I've been thinking I need to get a curling iron with a narrower barrel (1/2 in? 1/4in?)for those...

Midcentury Domestic to Post-modern Superwoman (Women Only)

Yes! I love this. There is a stunning difference between the advertisement housewife of the 50s and actual 50s housewives. I prefer the 30s and 40s because it seemed more down to earth, less all-out glamour. I am certainly not cut out to be a modern "superwoman". I aspire to be an old-fashioned...

What do you use to shave?

I am not a gent, however, I've finally found a method that works without horrible itchiness after a day or so. I use a vintage "safety razor" with any shaving cream, or Dr. Bronners. The bit that makes the difference though is that while my legs are still damp, I use Bag Balm or petroleum jelly...

    any old-school housewives??

I am for the time being! My husband has started getting a commission at work that kinda-sorta covers what I was making working part time so he let me know if I'd like to hold off on finding a new client I could. <3 I've been studying up on the old ways and techniques. I'm psyched!

How often do you dress vintage/vintage inspired?

Ack! I totally agree! Thrift stores are really helpful there. Looking for good quality materials (wool, leather, linen, etc.) will usually get you better workmanship and fit but it takes a lot of digging. Men's clothes are less susceptible to "fast fashion". I often get men's clothes cheap and...

How does a girl keep warm?

I have a whole pinterest board dedicated to this! I am interested in dressing how someone would have really dressed then, not like they did in ads and movies. Cotton or rayon housedresses, sweater, undershirt, girdle, stockings, pettipants. With all that on I am always warm (even warmer than in...

How often do you dress vintage/vintage inspired?

I was just saying this to my husband! So many men's dress slacks are still fairly high-waisted. I doubt many men would stand for miniscule rise jeans as women do. By cracky! ;-) Part of why I wear vintage full time is the comfort!

    What are you wearing today??

Grey wool pencil skirt (my favorite, with pockets!), Navy cotton sweater with 3/4 length sleeves, cotton undershirt, dark brown cotton stockings, 1940s brown oxfords with a 2" heel. Tiny new leather brown 1940s purse. (I had to pare things down to the bare essentials, dang you huge epi-pen!) Hair...

Vintage beauty tips for when time and money are scarce?

I think about this often too! I have quite a collection of pictures of everyday people of the 40s for reference and inspiration. After all, they had families and busy lives too! I've found oxford shoes, A-line or pencil skirt and a blouse or sweater suits most days and is quick! I've found pin...

How does a girl keep warm?

Sorry if this is repeating anything already said but: WOOL! Wool stockings, wool lined shoes, wool skirt and sweater, wool coat and hat. Wool pettipants, even cotton or silk will do. I am always plenty warm with panties, a girdle, undershirt, pettipants or slip, blouse or sweater, wool skirt...

    Golden Era Women's Names

My great Grandma's name was Mable Claire (which she disliked) Her husband called her his "Rose". I am Annie Rose (after her and my dad, Danny). My daughters' names are Ruby Rose and Penelope (Penny) Jane. I wanted old fashioned names that weren't too outlandish. I do sometimes wish I'd gone with...

whats the closest thing to Traveling back in Time? to get a feel of times past?

Sounds like the house I grew up in! No insulation. We just had the woodstove for heat, so the bedrooms were COLD in winter! I still can't sleep in a warm bedroom. Often the old houses had a screened porch for sleeping in the summer.

    Show your winter shoes!

I tend to go for the more practical, everday look of the 30s and 40s so I mainly wear leather oxfords with wool stockings (Sock Dreams O-woolies mainly). I also have some (modern) leather work boots that look like standard farm boots or WLA boots. I'd like to get some wellies for the truly...

    any old-school housewives??

I am right now. I will spend 12 hours or so a week caregiving after I find a new client. I'm working on becoming like the amazing multi-talented women that seem to have been the standard back in the day. Cooking from scratch, knitting/sewing (and having it look good!), farming and canning, etc.
