I have used my Highwayman ( with alpacca wool lining ) + shirt and a sweater in temperatures down to -15 Celcius.
Stiff? YES! - Cracks? No, absolutly not..
Here up north with often very cold winters, down jackets is the best - FQHH is for spring and autumn...
Maybe I can give you an advice about the storm cuffs : Soak them in warm
water, and put a "big" bottle (ex. a vine bottle) inside the arm - push the bottle down and through the cuff so it expand to maximum.
Let the cuffs dry, take the bottles out, put the jacket on - and you will not notice...
I have a Highwayman in FQHH with alpacca lining, and it is perfect down
to about 10 degrees Celcius below cero - what that is in Fahrenheit I don't know....
To me the alpacca is not itching at all, it feels like "silk soft wool", just with
a t-shirt under.

Yes that is right, Vadmel is a very closely woven wool, in the old days used
to work clothes, now used among other things, the Norwegian national
suits, coats, hats and so on..
