This is a running stitch and a whip stitch. The correct stitch is a back stitch, which resembles machine-stitching on one side. It's a sort of double running stitch. By whipping over the raw edges you've made it impossible to press the seam open for a clean finish, and all pressing should be...- Nick D

I just saw a plus-fours suit with the same feature a couple weeks ago in Edinburgh. It's a stay, to hold up the weight of whatever is put in the pocket. Having some trouble with my Indy Magnoli suit

Really Badly Listed & Photographed Vintage Suit, Size 36
The postage on small packages from home has been about $40-$60, so that may be the actual shipping for a heavy wool suit. Going the other way, a 2kg package is £23, but 2.1kg is £60.- Nick D

As Rudie says, the number (2, 4, 6, 8) refers to the amount they blouse over the knee. The idea is that since they are meant for sporting pursuits the long socks will get dirty instead of the trousers, and socks can easily be replaced. They were popular amongst cyclists for the same reason...
