That may be the ticket then! Yes it appears to be only the ribbon. Somehow the splatter only hit the fabric and not the felt. Feeling more uplifted now. But I'm not going to be the one who does the stitching on this one. DeMonico will have a visit from me next week! Thanks!!

Ok. And when you say "talc" are you actually talking about talcum powder, like Johnson's Baby Powder or Gold Bond? Or does that really matter? There's already a bit or water stain that I spread on the band when I tried to toothbrush it away in the hotel room the night it happened. But it's still...
Once again, major thanks. I'll be back after New Year's, and will give this all a try it post a photo of my plans with questions. No need to ruin a good hat for poor planning.

Spoke to the manager last night. He said he'll cover the cleaning. (Of course that was before we discovered my wife's coat has stains in it too).

But will the talc work if I won't be able to get to it for another week? That's my problem right now... Vacation and no chance to try cleaning before New Year's

Ok thanks. Im headed out of town for a week, hope that doesn't allow things to "set" for too long. I'll give it a try when I get back, or run the hat down to DelMonico.

Yes, I already had one hat cleaned and blocked at DelMonico. They loved this one, which I wore in when dropping the other. I was just hoping to avoid any risk of an entire cleaning, as that seems to have stiffened the other hat (from the 60's) and flatten it out.
What is this "naphthal" you...
Hey friends. In New York for the holiday, had dinner out last evening and a waiter crashed a tray of food right next to our table. My 1950's Borsalino was splashed on the hatband with something we assume is oil (from the green beans that went everywhere). I tried some water and a toothbrush in...
<sigh> OK thanks... My best guess is that aside from the one fabric hat, the rest will not survive the rolling. I'm not sure what you mean by "reeds," but I can say that (unless I can pack a good small hatbox in a large sturdy suitcase), most of these are full leather sweatbands and will likely...
Yes, the last one is easy... but I'd really like to know if I can roll the others. Some say yes (I've seen a few online "recommendations" from folks purporting to be experts). But indeed, these have leader sweatbands.
I'm talking about 8-10 hours rolled for a flight, not days or weeks on end...
Here are a couple of specific hats I am asking about (shown inside and out), whether they can survive a "roll" in a coffin box:
I'm pretty darn sure this last one is a Yes:
A question I am sure has been asked, but for which I cannot find the answer: I know that SOME Borsalino hats can be rolled, and I have seen the coffin boxes on eBay... but can ALL Borsalino hats be rolled? And for how long? I have a couple of fedoras from the 1960s (felt, with leather sweat...
So Alanfgag... I pulled back the sweatband AND the liner underneath, and found... YES, labels on both of the hats! I'm not sure if this helps with any dating or just verifies that these too are 50's-60's like the rest.
Both of these are the Colombo hats, one bark brown, the other dark green...
More reading... I thought there was no reading during the summer program!?
That hat was my father's (as opposed to all the others, which date to my wife's grandfather). Yes, I'm pretty sure it's 60's, maybe 50's.... just would have thought the others older. Live and learn. But in the end, we...
Thanks to all of you! Looks like I have a bit more research to do... and thanks for the ideas on the Google search as well, this will certainly help. Now if you wouldn't mind finding me a few more hours in my day so I can add this to my list of "things to do" without fear of it getting lost...
I'm sorry guys, really... I'm new to the group. And with over 400 pages to read through (many with photos), it's hard to find even using the search tools. If you can point me to something, I'll happily step back until my next find :-)
ALANFGAG, I assume now that you're calling the Colombo the two hats with the rope bands. Interestingly, these do NOT have any tags inside under the sweatbands. I'll check again later this evening, but I am 99% certain having run my hands around both of them, there is not even a remnant of a tag...
Alanfgag, which are you calling the Colombo (by my numbers)? I thought I had posted all of the labels I can find. Also late 50's seems late for the one I have as #3... Is there any way to tell by the numbering?
To all concerned… hello! I do hope I’m not taking advantage, being a newbie to at least this group. But I found you all through a search for some history on my family’s Borsalino hats… and I’m certainly not a stranger to good headwear, having been called a “hat person” since my high school days...
