Rayon challis resources
Hi ladies,
I didn't know where else to put this and I'm sure it's been asked a gazillion time anyways, but despite having done a forums search I came back empty, so here goes:
Does anyone have a good online resource for solid rayon challis (not sueded) yardage...
You might want to check out www.PatternRescue.com. They're a non-profit site that takes in peoples' unwanted patterns (including bits and pieces of them) and then redistribute them through the site to people who need them. There is also a recycle section and a trade section. It's actually quite...
Yardage Conversion Chart
I didn't know where else to post this. I came across a yardage conversion chart that I thought you folks might find handy. Vintage patterns and fabrics worked in widths that aren't common anymore, and I'm always lost when I find myself, for example, trying to decipher...
Some bias tape tricks I've found helpful that I don't think have been mentioned yet...
- not all store bought bias tapes are created equal. I find Wright's quite difficult to work with. It's like the bias tape equivalent of tent canvas. I tend to seek out tape that is lighter weight and...
I'm curious if anyone else has seen this. It's a series put out by the BBC back in '81 about a women's Japanese prison camp during WWII. I first saw it on PBS some time ago. Brilliantly done with a strong cast of characters that accurately reflect the times.
Tenko
It could be either organdy or organza. Organdy is stiff sheer cotton, while organza is (traditionally) silk or (more commonly) synthetic. The easiest way to find out is to do a fiber burn test. Take a thin, long cutting (doesn't have to be much, just a little scrap) and light it over a metal...
THANK YOU THANK YOU THANK YOU for posting this!!!!! First, it looks amazing. You did a terrific job and I love the fabric you chose. The reason I'm thanking you, though, is because I've got 2 1/2yd of this floral cotton that I adore but have been struggling to find just the right pattern for...
I'm sorry you've been struggling with the pattern. I've had projects like that, and they're a real pain. I don't know that it'll help you right now but for the future, I'd like to suggest you ignore the sizing and use patterns based on your personal measurements. Pattern sizes and retail sizes...
Long time listener, first time caller...
Hey everyone :) I've been a member for about a year now...I've just been really quiet about it. My fiance introduced me to FL, as his tastes are firmly planted in the '40s and '50s, and he thought I would enjoy the site, as well. He was right.
My...
If you're in the city on a Monday, I would suggest checking out the Iridium Jazz Club on 51st and Broadway. Les Paul plays there every Monday night. It's an intimate club with excellent martinis, ambiance and service. And did I mention Les Paul?
All of these rings are truly beautiful. :) It's wonderful to see such variety, too.
Mine's from the '30s. I don't know much about it, although I think that the two small circles on either side of the diamond used to house stones but were later filled. I would like to have them cleared and set...
I made this dress about two years ago, and love it. I found its' reputation as the "walk-away dress" a bit misleading, though. The pattern is simple enough, but there's a lot of hemming in the outer skirt. I made it with a stretch cotton sateen that worked really well. The bodice fit...
If you can't find hem weights for apparel, you might have some luck with drapery. Weights are sold in both square and round shapes in varoius sizes. Also, there's a product called weighted drapery cord, which is used in the hem of drapes and sheers. It should do the trick, too. :)
I copy all of my patterns. My mother-in-law works in a doctor's office and gives me rolls of the tissue used to cover exam tables. It works really, really well. I use a straight edge, hip curve and a pencil, and serger thread spools for weights.
I do it for two reasons. First, nothing is my...
Love this thread.
Although the majority of pics posted here are a bit...I dunno..."patchwork" for my tastes, I also recognize that my own style can be a bit overly match-y and could use a good shake once in a while. Ladies like these inspire me to think outside the box, to add a shot of...
Hi, everyone. :) I've been a member here for a while now and I think I might have introduced myself before, but I can't remember when or what I said, so I figured a re-do was in order.
My fiance, a lover of all things '40s and '50s, introduced me to Fedora Lounge, and am I ever glad he did...
Hi everyone,
My name's Jeannine and I'm a 31 year old Albertan living in Texas. I grew up with antiques and developed a taste for pre-WWII furniture (Arts & Crafts, especially Stickley) and housewares (I have a big weakness for kitchen supplies from the '30s. BIG. I'd sell my soul for a full...
