at the moment it's 'Leven Thirty Saturday Night by Ambrose and His Orchestra and, according to my iTunes playlist, George Olsen's rendition of Evening Star is up next ... ahhhhhh, life! :D
Gorgeous! Ohhh the beauty of silver nitrate!! Thanks for posting this truly gorgeous photo! "Our Dancing Daughters" is playing Wednesday night at the Silent Movie Theatre down here in Hollywood! I'll be there--- I urge anyone else in the area to attend!!!
Bix Beiderbecke is a perennial favorite. As are Joe Venuti and Eddie Lang, Fletch Henderson, Pops, all of the British dance bands (yes, of course that includes George Olsen, well done all of you!) the Cocoanut Grove bandleaders Abe Lyman and Gus Arnheim, Bing Crosby's work with Paul Whiteman...
it is very easy for people to dismiss very good looking fellas like Flynn as merely "pretty boys" ... but i think Mr. Flynn certainly proved his worth throughout his varied career!
Mr, Flynn will always be in! ;)
mmmmm ... "Just a Memory" as performed by Paul Whiteman and his Orchestra. Love it. Does anyone perchance have any other versions of this tune to reccommend? It's so lovely, I'm sure there are other renditions out there to revel in ...
:D
one of many ....
Very well put, this is going to be a FABULOUS thread!
Here is only ONE of many favorite film costumes ... the red velvet dressing gown Scarlett wears in GWTW when she and Rhett ... um ... well ....... yeah .... ;)
this is tooooo much fun, ladies!!
yes, well ... the difference ... unfortunate as it is ... is that Summer didn't loveTom.
As wonderful as he is, she simply didn't love him.
She did, however, love the man she married.
Such is life.
i know, i know, it's quite unfair and irrational. But I do not think it is "unrealistic" in...
oh my GOODNESS!!!! The outfit Ginger wears in the "Hard to Handle" number from Roberta has been one of my ALL TIME fav's!!! Well done you for singling that one out!!!
Agreed, C-Dot, about loving "everything Jean Harlow wore." Jean's my gal, and she still sets the bar (in my humble opinion) for '30s glam. This isn't her most glamarous outfit, but it's my favorite-- it positively SCREAMS 1934! :)
hmmm .... probably ANYTHING featured in the Popular Science movie shorts ...
but my favorite? this probably doesn't fall under "electronics," but here it is nonetheless:
The Ice Box.
I just moved into a 1930s-era apartment and it still has the old icebox in the kitchen ... and I am...
I also THOROUGHLY loved (500) Days of Summer-- I thought it to be one of the most realistic relationships I've seen on screen in a very, very long time. And I absolutely LOVED that it was a film set in LA without even ONCE referencing Hollywood!! FINALLY, a film set in LA that depicted the LA...
good ol' fletch...
listening to fletcher henderson's Hocus Pocus from 1934.
Can I just say that this particular track is, in every way imaginable, irresistible --
particularly with a Highball in a dimly lit, late afternoon apartment?
GENIUS FILM, a day at the races! It has what is probably my favorite marx brothers line ever: "That's in every contract, it's a sanity clause!" And then: "You can't fool me, there AIN'T no Sanity Clause!"
Going Hollywood
Watched TCM's Marion Davies marathon. Definitely a treat to see King Vidor's "Show People" and "The Patsy," and then this fun little piece of early 30s fluff-- "Going Hollywood." Boy oh boy did Bing ever croon in that one!!
A Jean Harlow
Mmmmm ...Had a thoroughly delightful evening sipping a few Jean Harlow's ....
...
White rum
2 oz sweet vermouth
The Blonde Bombshell was supposedly fond of this martini created in her honour. Best served chilled, with a lemon peel garnish.
