I wonder if the CBI patch could have been made in theater, which might explain its crude nature.
Obviously the ribbon bar is post-war, since it has the Occupation Service Medal ribbon on it. Perhaps the veteran changed out the ribbon rack to show his authorized Victory Medal and Occupation...
He could have been a radio operator/gunner on a bomber as well, which would explain the aircrew wings.
Here are some anecdotal discussions on another forum with people's experiences in having gone through radio school and gottne picked up for gunner training in order to perform in-flight...
Sir,
One minor correction. The laurel wreath is the Meritorious Unit Citation, not the Distinguished. The Distinguished Unit Citation, which later was renamed the Presidential Unit Citation, has always been a blue ribbon surrounded by a gold border.
Here's a link to the Army's Institute of...
That would make sense. AF personnel assigned to Army Airborne outfits would have to get jump qualified. I thought it could be that, or he had started off as a Paratrooper in the Army and later transferred to the AF and learned to fly airplanes.
I do hope they are eventually successful in raising the plane. It is a shame that we are scrambling about hunting wrecks in the farthest reaches of nowhere when so many planes were turned into scrap at the end of the war.

Sounds like this brought back good memories for you!
I discovered the Big Picture series when it was shown on on Armed Forces Television Network while on a deployment to the Mideast a few years back. Perhaps not such a pleasant reminiscence as you had :), but I did enjoy the show nonetheless.

Here is the Army's Big Picture series called Battle of the Bulge:

I have found some good videos on a lot of different topics at archive.org
Here's one produced by the Army's Big Picture series called Breakout and Pursuit, which details the breakout from the invasion beaches through the Normandy hedgerows. Hopefully my pasting the link will work as it has...
Greetings. I am glad to see there is a new person thread here; I should feel rather uneasy at jumping right into a topic as my introductory post! I live in Texas and have been a lurker here for a while; I have enjoyed reading the postings and hope someday to be a productively posting member of...
