Vintage Things That Have Disappeared In Your Lifetime?

They're using LED's in traffic lights now. It's kind of amusing to notice random patterns of individual LED's that have gone out in the array.

What modern invention/innovation do you wish had *never* been developed?

If I understand you correctly, I see it used excessively in movie previews to the point that I scarcely know what the movie will be about from the coming attractions. It's like strobe flashes of scenes accompanied by hard rock. I would get more out of reading a review in print.

Christmas retail stats - specifically the reporting of them as if they were sports scores.

What Was the #1 Song on the Day You Were Born?

When my time came to first see the light of day, Elvis was singing his number one hit "Don't". Sheesh. :eusa_doh:

    songs that make you shiver/cry

This one stirs something in me: WHEN MY MORNING COMES AROUND by IRIS DEMENT When my mornin' comes around, no one else will be there so I won't have to worry about what I'm supposed to say and I alone will know that I climbed that great big mountain and that's all that will...

WWII Carrier Pigeon and Secret Message Found in Chimney

Looking from my modern vantage point, the enthralling part is reading of a mode of communications in which electronics isn't the hero. Nice article.

What modern invention/innovation do you wish had *never* been developed?

It doesn't really matter what it's roots are (I hear more often that it's derived from the blues). It spun off into something separate and my own preference would be that it stays separate.

What modern invention/innovation do you wish had *never* been developed?

Plastic car parts - shrouds, tabs, even pulleys - I've had to work in frigid weather and have had them break like potato chips. Unibody - Yep. Good luck finding a place to use jack stands... everything is sheet metal or aluminum. Country music hasn't been Country for at least two decades now.

What modern invention/innovation do you wish had *never* been developed?

I might be sticking my neck out a little. Leaf blowers. I still prefer ordinary rakes - a little more work, but nice and quiet and a little exercise too. In autumn my small town neighborhood sounds like an industrial work zone. ... weed whackers, hedge trimmers, ... Does everything have to...

The nicest comment I ever heard

I was walking along a road wearing my black pea coat and grey fedora with black ribbon when a man coming the other way said "good afternoon, reverend". ...I think he meant it... I smiled, nodded my head and told him to have a nice day.

    Dinner guest?

At Midway Admiral Spruance was given an unfamiliar and high pressure role on short notice. The battle resulted in Japan's loss of naval dominance in the Pacific, which it never regained. This would be an interesting dinner discussion.

'Everyone lied to me': Hitler's rant in bunker

My favorite example concerns air supply to the sixth army in Stalingrad, in which Hitler listened to assurances that supported his own preconceptions and closed his mind to alternate strategies. With Hermann Goering's blessing of the operation (motivated by a desire to gain favor with Hitler)...

What sparked your fascination with the "Golden Era"?

I always appreciated the past - it's what got us where we are. My interest in the golden era snuck up on me when, in searching my radio dial for good music, I landed on AM740 from Toronto. Sunday is big band night, and I was amazed at the polish and virtuosity of the recording artists. Hearing...

What gives you that vintage feeling?

Photographing old farms, buildings, cars, trolleys, ships, etc. with black & white film, keeping out any modern references.
