    Terms Which Have Disappeared

I have read the term "flivver" applied to a car, but I've never heard it spoken.

    Terms Which Have Disappeared

    How about "knee-walking drunk"?

    This has got to stop!

Four hats in two months? To me, that's tapering off. You know you're really bad when your family starts referring to your "hat room" in the house.

So trivial, yet it really ticks you off.

I heard a news report on a hot air balloon crash stating that there was a "significant loss of life"; is there such a thing as an insignificant loss of life?

FS Deckard fedora sz 7 3/88

That is a great looking hat. What is the actual color and how wide is the brim? Does it include a box? Thanks.

    Terms Which Have Disappeared

    Hammered. Wasted. Polluted. Annihilated.

    Does your name date you?

Our local television station runs a list of obituaries after the news each day; I tend to watch for names that are no longer in common use. "Well, that's the last 'Agnes' I'm going to see." "So long, Eunice, Dolores, Betty, Beatrice . . ."

So trivial, yet it really ticks you off.

"This product is packaged by weight, not volume. Some settling of the contents may have occurred during shipment." There's about half a box of cereal in there . . .

So trivial, yet it really ticks you off.

We were a single income family for many years, up until I was about eight (my brother was ten). My mother was our primary (almost exclusive) caregiver and totally managed the household and finances. My Dad was the breadwinner. Their arrangement was that my Dad could hunt and fish to his...

    Your Most Disturbing Realizations

Whenever I've gone to a signing, I try to come up with a question that the person hasn't heard a million times (For instance, I'm sure Doug Flutie is sick of talking about the Hail Mary pass), or bring up something minor that shows them that I've paid attention to them. This worked great for...

    Your Most Disturbing Realizations

Zombie_61: I agree completely. I've gone to a number of book signings for authors, open signings for athletes or some musicians after concerts in small venues but I would consider approaching them "out in the world" to be rude. I should also say that a picture of me and whoever together has...

    Your Most Disturbing Realizations

Same here. Boxing's place in history (Schmeling vs. Louis was a lot more than a prizefight), it's characters, the skill and the brutality of it just fascinate me. However at it's essence it is a bloodsport and time is not often kind to the majority of it's athletes.

    Your Most Disturbing Realizations

I drove my car to a concert in downtown Detroit to see John Fogerty in concert. He had just released Blue Moon Swamp and was (finally!) playing his Creedence songs again. He was someone whose music had meant a great deal to me growing up, so I bought tickets for me and my best boyhood friend...

What moves the needle to morally bankrupt is when he tips his hand and orders the body of the Tiger shark destroyed to prevent an autopsy that would prove that it was the man-eater.

Fictional characters defined by their hats

Tom Mix - his hat style was named for him. Clint Eastwood in the "Man with No Name" trilogy. The hats varied but the styles were pretty similar.

    Happy 75 to Bob Dylan!

He certainly doesn't come off as a shy introvert on The Royal Albert Hall album or the Dont Look Back (1967) film or Newport, for that matter. But time can change a person. As you say, he is extremely private concerning his personal life and has revised several stories about his own history...

    Happy 75 to Bob Dylan!

Bob's swagger, utter and complete confidence allow him to wear whatever he chooses without a trace of self consciousness. The guy always looks great because he knows he looks great.
