The Great Gatsby - Remake in the Works

I just rented this on a whim…as the previews didn't look that exciting. I didn't make it past Jay-z rapping to 1920's art-deco glamour. That was the dumbest, most anachronistic, foolish, unartistic decision I've encountered in a while. It was disgusting on so many levels. The cinematography was...

    British Gentleman

While certainly not as mature a story as Remains of the Day, another Hopkins films that came to mind, in which he also plays an English gentleman, is 84 Charring Cross Road. The American protagonist is annoying, but Hopkins is wonderful as usual.

I'm very much enjoying this conversation. Thank you all for your helpful contributions. Please keep them coming. Thanks!

    British Gentleman

What films feature the classic English Gentleman for you? I was watching Remains of the Day and thinking about how Anthony Hopkins is the classic English Gentleman in that film--and not because he's typecast or playing a conventional role. He certainly infuses it with his own theatrical magic...

    Golden Age Culture

Thanks for the Mitchell recommendation. I'm looking for a text that details American life, particularly the culture of extravagance---travel, trains, cars, entertainment, radio, newspapers, prize fights, the glamour of the era.

    Golden Age Culture

I'm looking for a book about the culture of the 30's and 40's--the way of life with newspapers, railways, cars, and the implications for culture and identity--a kind of cultural history. Any suggestions?

    Drinks and Cigars in Film

I've always loved Edward G. Robinson's cigars in Key Largo as well as the image of Babe Ruth at the plate with a cigar!

    Military style hair brush

How did military brushes give one's hair an automatic shine sans product? Does it matter whether pne uses boar or plastic bristles?

    Man-Cave in Books and Films

I was watching the great Merchant-Ivory production of "Remains of the Day" recently, and a great scene with Anthony Hopkins appeared: he entertaining a friend in his study, listening to records by the fireplace, enjoying cigars, and spirits. I began thinking about how important man caves are to...

    Your Reading Room

Quite a few studies have been published that document the importance of physical space in influencing mental space. With that in mind, what does your reading room look like. I tend to prefer a more 19th century look. I love dark walls, dim light, etc. Something that invokes the Holmes study:

    Drinks and Cigars in Film

There are threads about hats in films, cars, suits, all types of golden era delights. What films display drinks and cigars in particularly aesthetic ways. Granted, every golden era film has an abundance of cigarettes and drinks, but they're so often displayed in this kind of matter-of-fact...

    1940's England

I just watched Brief Encounter (again) and was wondering what films from across the pond give you that particularly British sense of Golden Era. I tend to go back to End of the Affair, Brief Encounter, and the Gathering Storm. What films do you watch to enjoy England in the 40's?

    Gold lamp light

Conelrad, thanks for the experiments and close-up shots. That's great! So outside of getting some vintage bulbs, I'll use some 40 watts for now. I bought a yellow hued candle style 40 watt bulb for a vintage brass lamp. This looks close but isn't ideal.

    Movie Stills ID

Can anyone id these movie stills--particulalry the second, third, and fourth images? I tried to embed the images, but for some reason it didn't work. http://starletshowcase.blogspot.com/2008/11/desk-set-2.html All from here: http://starletshowcase.blogspot.com/ Some really nice shots

So just use a 40 watt or lower?

    Gold lamp light

In most of the Golden Era photos of homes or offices, the lights emit a yellow hue. I know that gaslight does this, but besides a yellow shade or an amber bulb, how can I reproduce this yellow lamp light at home? Thanks!

    Gooseneck Lamp Refinish

The lamp is in fine structural condition, but the rust is unsightly. I didn't know I could strip and refinish the whole thing! What should I use to strip the base and shade part to the bare metal? Also, since the bulb will make the shade portion quite hot, should I use a special type of paint...

    Vintage Desk Help

Okay, so I'm looking at either the classice pedestal desk, for a small size, or the lager oak desk if I want something in the 60 inch range? I like the teacher's desk style--those drawers may spoil me. I did recently find this 1938 find though. I'm just trying to talk the seller WAY down in...

    Gooseneck Lamp Refinish

I have a classic gooseneck desk lamp and the top shade is quite rusted. Ive tried to clean the lamp with rust removal and other such things but all to no avail. Is there a way to refinish the top? The scratches and rust really dampen the look for me. Thanks!

    Vintage Desk Help

Roll tops, while nice, don't give me nearly enough space. I have the same complaint about secretaries' desks. The typewriter's desk seems the same style as the teacher's desk, but I prefer the sleeker look of the latter. Maybe that's the only option for me? Are there even other vintage disks...
