That’s a great idea Tiki Tom! I do something similar when I get a new cooking magazine, but it was never a conscious thought, I just boutht magazines with lots of recipes that appealed to me.
Too true Fireman! People need to recognize and respect their own limitations. Then they should challenge themselves to improve - on a range!
Great avatar, by the way! Is it a 3L or a 4.5? I’ve always lusted after a Walter Owen-era Bentley.
Beautiful ‘Rover, and great rifles too. I have a couple of #1 Mk3s. One from 1918, and an Australian Lithgow from 1944. Both sporterized, unfortunately.☹️ Good shooters though!
I’ve never had a spring assist knife before, but I hear good things about them. Just because something has new technology is certainly no reason to reject it, but I have a very full house so I now tend to only buy things that I need, and that’s after very extensive research to determine just...
Thanks KennyZ. I wanted a historical fighting knife that was understated and not enormous, but with some history behind it. If you’re interested in the Shanghai Fighting Knives, there’s a fascinating website devoted to their history here. Well worth checking out...
For such a long skinny handle that looks a bit clumsy, they fit the hand very well and are so comfortable to hold. It's nice they actually have a long enough blade to be useful too. Ever try to slice a loaf of bread with a Swiss Army knife?
I suspect glass of any sort was pretty rare on any rifle on the 1920s. Iron sights were about the only option. I also suspect there were far fewer old-eyed shooting in those days. Also, I've been told that unless you are after plains game, a lot of the shooting in Africa is done pretty close...
I love camping, but it’ll be April sometime before the snow here goes so it’ll be a while yet. I generally get around 20 nights in under canvas every summer. I grew up trailer camping, but often slept in my own tent when the rest of the family was in the trailer. Trailers and RV’s are the way...
I have a pair of Eschenbach Farlux 10x28 binoculars. I bought them new about 8 or so years ago for travelling. While compact, they have amazing optics, are waterproof, and armoured, and the coatings on the lenses are superb. They were not cheap, but they are amazing field glasses and I love...
This is our mechanical coo-coo clock that we bought in the Black Forest on a trip to Germany in 2018. It’s not vintage, but it is hand carved and hand made, and very traditional, so I don’t care. We were there for a wedding, and thought we should have a clock as a souvenir, and this is what we...
Here’s my Seth Thomas barrister’s clock. Either WWI vintage or late 1920’s is my best guess. It keeps great time, but it’s supposed to chime the Westminster tune every quarter hour, but only manages to to so every hour. Sometimes the number of bongs on the hour are off to, but it doesn’t...
Finally, something really “golden age”. My reproduction 1930s Shanghai Fighting Knife that I had made for me 10 years or so ago. These were the first predecessors of the famous Fairbairn-Sykes commando knives used in WWII and beyond. Only a few of them were made in the Shanghai Municipal...
Next we have my Laguiole pocket knife. I had it made in Laguiole, France in carbon steel and Briarwood burl. The handle is almost black due to 15 years of daily use, but it doesn’t matter at all to me as I love this knofe so much. I carry it all the time, every day. I call it my French army...
Some of my kitchen knives next. The first is a repro of a 19th century longhunter’s knife, made in India in carbon steel. It took a bit of work to get it right, but it was cheap, easily sharpenable, and holds an edge for a long time. I have a sheath for it but it’s not in the kitchen where I...
Here are some of mine.
Darksword Armouries hand forged blade. A bit OOP, i know, but thought I’d put it in anyway.
19th century Nepalese kukhri from the IMA cache. One of their Long-leaf models. It’s only been cleaned up a little bit. I need to put some more effort into this one of these...
