Rules for G1's
What's the big problem. We all have different "reasons" for digging these jackets - they're really hot. We probably have different ways of using them, too. Hey - they just look and feel real good!
During '50s '60's, Schott made a really handsome steerhide jacket, usually black, with a gathered leather waistband. It wasn't a motorcycle jacket or a bomber jacket and and the jackets were very popular around NYC. I even so a few without a leather collar - just a small knit around the neck...
leather varsity jackets
These look great - glad someone else appreciates these guys. Check out my thread on my collection of Canadian hockey jackets! Let me know what you think of these!
New leather jacket
My advice about your new jacket - just enjoy it. You don't even have to wear it to do that! Anybody agree with me on that? Send some pics so we can too.
VLJ Site
I dont know what the old site was like - this one is addictive. I keep going back to it about four times a day. Amazed there are so many other jacket nuts out there! I'm learning a lot and keepin' warm. It's usually pretty cool up here at 7,800 feet - even in the Summer.
Just entered my brand new avatar! In addition to some other standard leather jackets, I have a few of these classic rugged Canadian hockey team jock numbers. Anyone want to know more about these beauties?
Longshoreman,
I know what you mean about the shape and feel of that "swapped" leather jacket. (Any pics?) My 1953 "Outerwear" horsehide half back is worn in just right. Someone's been conditioning this real well for a long time. Won't swap this one! Thanks for the pics- I'll send one later.
how many?
Just came today - a great lookin' cordovan brown leather varsity jacket once worn by some hockey jock at MacMasterson Un. Patches all over it and it fits really well! My collection grows - anyone else interested out there?
how may jackets?
I'm a newcomer, but I'll give this a try! Currently:
1. B3 in pretty bad shape
2. G1 worn by skipper of the USS Coral Sea - Korea & Nam
3. G1 worn by pilot in Marine All Weather Fighter Sq.
4. Lewis Police Eq. LA Sherrif Dpt Horsehide Motor Jacket
5. 1953 Horsehide...
new HH A2
Adam,
Can see why you love this leather jacket already. The HH looks nice and heavy - probably has that strong new horsehide smell as well. It needs abut 5 to 6 years of constant wear. Give it your all!
G1 dating
This beautiful little G1 looks almost exactly like the one I have. It was worn by a pilot from the 542 Marine Allweather (and All Leather!) Fighter Squadron in Korea and Nam. All the patches and leather in great condition. Korean coins as zipper tag - typical touch.
Roughwear
Andrew,
Thanks for the advice. The only decent A2 so far was $900 - I bid on it,tho. Sure you dont want to sell one of those great ones you seem to have or swap for my half back?
longshoreman,
Ben and Colin,
You two guys live close enough foor the "swap". My horsehide half back here in the States is a perfectly preserved relic of the 50's. Someone must have used saddle soap or Lexol on this one to keep the leather looking and feeling this good. I'll post a pic...
Already wrote back about my 50's leather halfback. Forgot to ask why you were so "attracted" to the jacket. So am I. What exactly is that - any ideas? I have all my 50's memories of them. All the toughest guys in my class wore them proudly. How about you?
dating a half belt
Andrew - Solid looking jacket. Almost as good as my 1954 "Outerwear" front quarter horsehide I got on ebay for$250. Leather still rich and supple, sheepskin lining, fur collar, rich aroma. Someone's been taking real good care of this beauty for a long time. Doesn't look or...
longshoreman
Really nice jacket. I have a similar "Outerwear" half back horsehide jacket from around '54. It's in unbelievably excellent shape - Heavy supple leather, sheepskin lining, nice strong horsehide aroma. Looks like it's been worn only a few years. Someone was taking really good care...
