Worse than a hat!
A fiddler friend of mine has a lovely old English fiddle, about 150 years old, which he bought from a pub landlord who was renovating the bar. It was NAILED to the wall!
Took some work but it's nicely set up now. Saved!
I'm a button squeezebox player myself and have seen...
I have a 60's Hampton in a sort of charcoal grey. One of my favourites. Nice feel to the felt and in excellent condition. Have to see if I can get a photo for the thread.
The only difference to the ones above is that the ribbon has two rows of small woven squares (all same colour) as a...
I use a length of masking tape, don't know if you call it that in the States. A paper based, cream coloured sticky tape they use in decorating with very little stickiness. Peels off after they've painted leaving a clean line.
Anyway, I stick that around the inside band, cut it exact length or...
Selfridges stores are still going strong, as are Failsworth hats!
Selfridge is one of the big department store chains here with four branches around the country.
I certainly don't remember a bowler revival in the 60's but they were still being worn by City businessmen back then.
I...
Funnily enough it was rain on a fedora that got me into them.
I was staying for a few nights at Isaac's hostel in Dublin many years ago. It was chucking it down out. (I know why Ireland is called the Emerald Isle!) I was in the public room with several others planning which Guinness supplier...
Last two funerals I've attended I've worn my morris kit! White shirt, no tie, black britches, white knee length socks , brown leather waistcoat, bowler hat and bells and ribbons!
Mind you, they were both morris dancer's funerals.
I can reccommend Murphy of Ireland from the post above. Never bought a hat from them but I have bought a few of their excellent Gleneske Grandad shirts. They were excellent at answering emails and they were very good at getting the cheapest shipping to the UK.
They are near the border with...
I wear a bowler when playing the squeezebox for my local morris side. I picked up a lovely Dunn's bowler from ebay a couple of years ago. Sold as used but I would have said it was new. Lovely hat and just the right size.
Must have been one of the last Dunn's sold as it has the size in metric...
Which tall ship are you going on? We have a Tall Ships festival near me in Gloucester and I see several regularly. One of the big ones is the Kaskalot and their ship's cook comes to our morris and music sessions whenever the ship is in the dry dock at Gloucester.
An important man on the ship...
I have that exact make of beret though mine has a leather hat band. I bought it in a boina shop in San Sebastian just over the border in Spain (in the Basque region!) That's the only place I've seen lots of (civilian) men wearing berets. It's great hat and gets a lot of use in winter as it's a...
Odd about the flat cap making you think of lower classes. In Britain they are worn by anyone from the royal family to the beggars.
Also I've never seen a bowler worn by anyone other than a morris man! I have one for the same reason.

I've found that most things I buy from the States get charged all the fees they can think of. Things from Australia and New Zealand always sail through unchallenged - so far. As does stuff from Europe (EC does have the odd good use) Canada's ok and even China gets through. Not the good 'ole USA...
Here in the UK, I've had two Akubras and a Drizbone coat from hats Direct over the last few years. Never been charged any customs on them. Also had a few Swanndri items from New Zealand, also no problems.
On the other hand, I've given up buying anything from the States as I always get charged...
I've had one for years. They are useful hats and I wear mine a lot. Does look good on you. You just need the fly fishing gear now!
My problem with these hats is I don't think of Sean Connery - I think of Inspector Clouseau of the Sûreté...

Nice job, looks much like mine!
All my hats have to have a crease along that line as I have a high head! When I first got my Fed I tried a straight down the middle crease but it rested on the top of my head and disn't touch the sides!

He should think himself lucky! Several years ago, a friend's mother put his favourite Barbour waxed jacket through the wash while he was out! She reckoned it looked a bit grubby so put it on a hot wash too...
