Video of Nathaniel of Nates Hats

You are correct. He made two of the Outback Explorers for Bernstein (the first one was accidentally left behind). He also made Will Smith's hat in Wild Wild West as well as supposedly for much more famous people, but he seems discrete and humble enough to not promote that fact. Bill

Video of Nathaniel of Nates Hats

I just came across this video of Nathaniel Funmaker that shows some of the century-old equipment he uses to make his custom hats. Thought it might be of interest to some here. His main market is western but he made the Aussie-style Outback Explorer in my avatar. I'm told he can do fedoras...

The Dumbest Comment I Ever Heard

Usually a waste of time replying to drunks, but if you must, look directly at him and say, "San Diego Vice. So what can you tell me about Hoes?" Of course, insert the appropriate jurisdiction. Bill (former vice squad member)

Reblocking a Wool Felt Outback Hat

Your "Indiana/Kentucky" location may be close to Cincinnati. In that case, you could stop into one of the best hat shops in the country, Batsakes at 6th & Vine in downtown Cincy (described in other FL threads). It's been a few years since I had a hat reblocked there, but I don't recall it...

    Airport Security

I've had success clipping the brim against the seat pocket with a wooden clothespin, except in commuter jets where there is no leg room. Bill

    top hats. the right way

There is a neighborhood not far from where I live where you see just about any kind of headwear imaginable. Two days ago in the heat of the afternoon I passed a small group of men with rasta and watch caps and such and right in their midst was a big guy in sleeveless tee shirt and dirty camel...

Hats as protection against the sun and the elements.

My Nate's Outback Explorer with 3-inch brim (pictured at left) has become a favorite for Serious Sun Days. On dress down SSD's, I wear a Tilly TH5 with 3.5-inch front/back and 3-inch sides. My best Borso panama actually has a 3-inch droopy brim but doesn't see as much action as other hats. Bill

Decline of hat wearing - What Makes a Man Wear a Hat? - Article

The surgeon said it has to be a wide brim. He didn't say it had to be ugly.;) Bill

    "New" store in Dayton, OH

Pretty much retail. At least it was about a year and a half ago when I was there last. They do have a lightweight steamer and did a bit of repair with it for me on a wool brim, but I eventually had to take the hat elsewhere. Bill

    Favorite hat stores?

You guys are going to get me into big trouble! ;) I've now added new must-see attractions to my POI (Points of Interest) list. More shops to visit and hats to bring home. Bill

    "New" store in Dayton, OH

I bought one of my favorite hats (& a few suits) in the old Price Store...a Dobbs Temptation. They had a few hats in my size in those days. I'll have to check out their new digs although about the only time I get downtown is to see a baseball game or hit the Dublin Pub in the Oregon District...

    Panamas on Rainy Days?

If I plan to be in enough rain to need the GoreTex, I keep the panamas at home and throw on the Tilley TH4. Nearly indestructable. Actually, my Nathaniel's Outback Explorer is supposed to be pretty good in the rain, but I have yet to wear it in a downpour. Bill

    Attached to my hat.

I now carry a spring-type wooden clothespin when I fly with a nice non-crushable hat, and clip the brim to the seat back pocket. It wouldn't be much of a stretch to attach a cord or string to one. A fancy custom-made sterling silver clip could substitute for the clothespin, I suppose. With...

    I Hate Hats II

That reminds me of comedian Ron White's routine about getting kicked out of a bar for wearing his hat inside. BTW, my bank requires customers to remove sunglasses and hats before entering. Bill

All You Need to Know About Hat Etiquette

WWBD? (What Would Bogey Do?) Simply use the Bogey test: Heading to the 47th floor? Wear your hat through the lobby past the homeless guy with his Dodgers ball hat turned backwards, tip your hat to the lady on the elevator (assuming it is not packed full of humanity...and who had the greek...

Hats As Sun Protection, NOT Just for Bald Men

I have a full head of hair but had reconstructive surgery on my face two years ago because of skin cancer. The surgeon said there was likely a cumulative effect from the sun over time. I had returned to frequent wearing of brimmed hats in recent years, but it was too late. "Frequent" has...

Hats In The Car/A Newbie Question

The many posts confirm that there are big differences in car headroom whether vintage or modern. I'm 6-1 and can wear hats up to 5-inch crowns, at least, in all the family cars...except the convertible even with the top down ;-) Go figure. Bill

    Hat Sponge? Really?

I received brush and hard and soft sponges for my new Nathaniel's Outback Explorer and was shown how to use them. What PabloElFlamenco said is spot on to what I learned. I also have a brush and sponge for my darker hats, too. It's important to avoid using one sponge for both dark and light...

    Nathaniel's Outback Explorer

Sorry about the delay in getting back...something about holiday sloth. This one is 50% beaver and 50% rabbit and normally sells for $525. Nate will also put a brim edge binding on it for an extra $25. He makes pure rabbit and pure beaver versions with a variety of colors and ribbon...

    Nathaniel's Outback Explorer

A couple of months ago I ordered my first custom-built hat and got it last week. Per request, here are a few photos. It is an Outback Explorer in 50/50 blend from Nathaniel's of Colorado. The color is a tan called Sahara. The felt is very "dense", yet lightweight. The crown is 4". The...
