    Repetition can be an effective device. And it can be tedious. I got nothing against the five-dollar word, provided it’s the better word than the five-cent one. Too often it isn’t. Stilted prose has me turning toward something else to read.

    Makes sense, seeing how my early years were spent mostly in the Upper Midwest. Maybe that’s still the more common usage there. I’ll ask a cousin or two.

    Tony’s losing usage battle No. 452 … “Incredibly” is NOT synonymous with “very.” “Extraordinarily” gets a little closer, but it’s not a match, either.

    ^^^^^^^ Tow trucks were still commonly called “wreckers” in my early years. It’s been quite some time since that was the more common usage.

    I‘m not a shot glass collector (hell, I don’t even drink) but it seems I have a collection of shot glasses, as I was reminded yesterday evening while taking out and washing the rarely used dishes and such that get relegated to the rear of the upper cabinets and collect whatever funk in the air...

    I looked into it. It seems that purple martins migrate through this region but they don’t set up housekeeping here. But other birds make use of this type of birdhouse. So, I dunno, maybe I’ll find a squirrel-proof way to hang it. But it’s already too late for it to see any use this year.

    My greater concern on that hat is the dye from the sweatband bleeding clean through the felt. I doubt that could ever be washed out. It could be covered by a wide ribbon, but then it wouldn’t be much of a Stratoliner.

    Among my collection of vintage lids that rarely if ever get worn is a very clean Stratoliner in brown, but I won’t sell it because it was a gift from my lovely missus going on 20 years ago. I have three of those oval Stratoliner boxes, too. They aren’t for sale, either, unless someone shows...
