How to travel with hats

Was thinking about this again tonight. Also thinking about the “what-to-do-in-the-restaurant-table-for-two-and-no-place-to-put-the-hat” conundrum.

My brother, who wears inexpensive cowboy hats, told me that he has at times resorted to putting his hat on the floor, in restaurants when there is nowhere else.

Considering, I got to thinking that an ultralight nylon bag, one that would fit easily, and that one could carry unnoticably, in a back pocket, large enough to hold the hat, would be a way of protecting it on the floor of a restaurant. Or a plane, under one’s legs.

I ordered this: https://www.amazon.com/dp/B0D5J5XD6Q?ref=ppx_yo2ov_dt_b_fed_asin_title&th=1. I have a day backpack from this company, Nanobag, that I carry on walks in a back pocket and use to put my jacket or sweater, even a sportcoat, in, when I get hot from walking. Or to carry a rain jacket in if I think it might rain. If it rains, I put on the jacket and the daypck disappears into a back pocket. Very light, high quality, folds up or bunches up into nothing. (I don’t use the pouch as I don’t like the bulge it creates in a pocket)

Not ideal, placing one’s hat on the floor in a plane or restaurant, but this will keep it clean. The straps will also likely work to hang the hat from the back of a restaurant chair.

I have two silk bags in my car that I slip into my pocket when travelling, in a restaurant or theatre. Worst case scenario but often the only choice is to place the hat on the floor. I slip the hat into the silk sack. It is thin, folds up very small and protects the hat. I have been using this for years and it works. One has a simple velcro closure the other has nothing....both work.

Way ahead of me, BelfastBoy!

The Nanobag arrived this AM. Works like a charm:
