In honor of National Felt Day I'll post one I've been meaning to put up, although I'll probably be wearing straw to work because it's still in the 90s here.

This one is a mystery. No model name, has whipstitching on the self-felted band like the Stetson Tijuana (and shares the block number with it according to pictures posted by @BobHufford and @Magpie621 ), but has an overwelted brim. There have been a couple other hats like this posted previously but they appear to have had raw edge brims and the whipstitch on the bottom of the self-felted band instead of the top. It's the second hat that's come to me with a crease that's off center and I can't for the life of me seem to get it out. I may just give in and wear crooked.

Here are some posts of similar hats.

the hat from the above discussion since the original pics disappeared.

Another one

Stetson Tijuana's with the same block number (although neither with a model name, I actually don't think I've seen a Tijuana posted with the name in it):

(this is the tag for another Tijuana, scroll up for the hat)

Guessing mine is in the 1948-1952 range based on the fact that it is a Royal DeLuxe Stetson instead of a Royal Stetson DeLuxe, has an oilskin liner, the earlier type inventory tag, and the keyhole size tag on manila paper. 2 5/8" brim. Lovely felt.

It's got some foxing on the liner and the stitches at the sweatband seam fell apart when I flipped it inside out, but otherwise in excellent shape. May tape the seam back together if I can't re-stitch it, although it seems a good candidate for that.

Nothing special, nothing vintage, not a very fine weave, but it is a natural panamahat from ecuador and breathable. I also like the bow treatment on it, so i couldn't resist it for €10.
It was a littlebit out of shape, but steam is my best friend. Actually i like it :)

Nice score, Marcel. It looks similar to my Mayser Panama. You and I are going to have to work out a trade deal one of these days!

Thanks Randy. I actually bought it also as a workhorse round the house.
I would love to trade, but trading from usa will be very expensive i think, delivery costs, custom clearance costs..... :-(

And.....you are size 57 ;-)

Until now I have successfully avoided learning how to do my own maintenance and repair work on these hats. That's over. Time to bite the b ullet and learn some new skills.

I got this hat in today. I like Stephen L. Stetson. I just like the backstory. The sweatband on this hat was completely dry rotted. In fact, the only thing about the sweatband that is still functional is the thread holding it to the felt, which appears to be made out of steel cable or something. That will require some work to remove. The rest of th sweatband, however, crumbled into pieces at the slightest touch.

I'm going to learn how to clean hats and then we will see what we can see. The felt itself is in pretty good shape, as is the liner.

Stephen L. Stetson fedora - age TBD

I bought this hat because it was pretty and cheap.

This Lee “Kingway” Black Label Water-Bloc Homburg is a very dark burgundy-brown, with a lighter ribbon and binding that bring out the reddish tones.

I’m dating it approximately to the 1950s based on the liner, plastic-covered tip, sweatband markings and factory label. It was originally sold by Werner’s at 3152 South 27th Street in Milwaukee.

@blewnote maybe you can tell me how good I am getting at dating Stetsons....

I’m going to go out on a limb and guess that this one was offered for sale by Clark the Hatter of Kansas City, MO on April 20, 1952. My dad would have been -3 years old at the time. This kind of boggles my mind sometimes.

Clark the Hatter was a longtime Kansas City shop, in business from at least the turn of the century and still operating when this hat was apparently tagged in 1952. I haven't found a storefront photo yet, but I did buy a matchbook cover to go with this hat.

This may be my first restoration attempt. Unless someone talks me out of it. The felt on this hat is very nice, with no mothing at all. Dirty though. The liner is in good shape, unless you count the yellowing of the onion skin.

I’m pretty sure the sticker lying on the table is dated 4/20/1952, but unfortunately I couldn’t unfold it far enough to get a good photograph without risking destroying what was left of it. I may look into some kind of document restoration or something. I'd like to be able to put that sticker back together so that the date is readable.

The felt is quality, and both the liner and sweatband are clean and worth saving. So I’m torn between:

a.) jump in the deep end
b.) don’t mess this hat up, dummy

What do you guys think?

Oh, and does the size tag look like it's just creased or did someone glue the tag back together? See the last photo above.
