Buyer Beware: Legendary USA, Horrible

Having an awful experience with this company. I ordered a Beck 566 from them last Thursday because I wanted a horsehide motorcycle vest and it was in the exact style I wanted it in.

The owner Chris sends me a template email that night saying "We are making size 42 BECK 566 for you this weekend. Unfortunately 42's are the most popular size and this vest has gone viral. We will be able to ship to you on Tuesday. Thank you for your patience!"

And I agreed. Fine, no problem, I understand. I've waited longer for clothes. Tuesday rolls by with absolutely no updates, emails, changes. I email them on Wednesday asking for an update. They don't respond. I call them on Thursday and is dumped to voicemail after going through the operator. I email them again on Thursday, ignored again. I then call them on Saturday, again, and this time the voice says the shop is closed, despite their own business hours listing them as open.

At this point, (Saturday), I'm pretty much done. You have $450 of my money, the least you can do is respond to my emails, especially for a company that advertises "responsive service and transparent business practices".

So I send them a cancellation email, fully expecting to be ignored, and started a chargeback with my card company.

Sunday morning at 12AM, I get an email from a Kimberly, responding to my cancellation request, saying sorry for the delay, that their manufacture has finished my vest and they are expecting it, and that they would refund me 20% and shipping if I keep the order. No dates on when they would actually get it and ship it. I said "No thanks".

Then, Sunday at 8pm, I receive a phone call from Chris himself, who opened the phone call with "Why are you filing a chargeback?" And I said "Because I've tried to contact your company multiple times with zero response." And he says "So if I open my email right now, I'll see emails from you?" And I say "Yup."
He then goes to presumably check his email while muttering "Unbelievable, this really hurts a small company. Unbelievable." And then "So you don't want the vest?" And I said "No thanks."

And then Chris laughs, presumably when he sees my email trail, and says "Oh you're in New York? We're close. Are you in a club?" To which I said "Nope."
And Chris says, laughing again "I thought not. We're close. I'll see you buddy." And hangs up on me.

My immediate reaction is "What the hell? Did this guy just threaten me?" But I chalked it up to macho man BS. Even more bizarrely, at 6:40AM today (Monday) Kimberly emails me again saying "We can't refund you because you started a chargeback, if you resolve it we'll refund you right away so you don't have to wait."

So the whole sequence of 1. Being ignored 2. Being offered a discount after Kimberly realized I got ignored because of my email trail 3. The owner challenges whether I tried to contact them via openly confrontational phonecall 4. Owner realizes I did try to contact them and issues a vague threat 5. Kimberly trying to get me to drop the dispute less than 12 hours later.

Basically. Save your money. Don't deal with these people.

The phone interaction sounds really bizarre and inappropriate for sure, but do i understand correctly that the total delay was 9 days?

There's a thread on them and how it changed ownership, dropping in quality and overall transparency:

Yup, definitely not that long overall, what irked me was a complete lack of communication past their own given due date. Previous companies/makers I've worked with will always send an email the day OF the given date if they cannot make it. Nor have I ever dealt with a maker or company that is completely unreachable by phone. Basically, at the 9 day mark I felt "I cannot get ahold of anyone. I want my item soon. Other people make this item. I would rather give my money to someone else".

The phone call basically cemented my decision. Maybe I was being impatient, but I also stand by it, especially after that call.

I wish I saw this thread before I placed the order

With reputable makers, a lead time of 8 weeks or so isn't unusual.

For something off the rack, if it's sold out, but they can restock and fulfill the order within 2 weeks, that's pretty good. Lucky even.

But there's no excuse for failing to respond to emails and phone calls. Of course a chargeback gets their attention. By then it's too little, too late. And the conversation you had with them sounds totally inappropriate.

I would keep the chargeback open. That's the process you're on now, and canceling it puts you back at their mercy and lets them off the hook.

I would've thought that one look at their website ought to be enough of a deterrent from doing any business with them. And I won't even mention their degenerate Insta account.

You've done the right thing to cancel your order, mainly because you wouldn't have gotten what you had ordered. There's no "manufacture" of any kind working on your vest. If you don't have the time to go through the thread @Zoro linked, every single maker the original Legendary used to work with, had dropped them & they're just drop shipping junk from overseas marketplaces, hence all vague answers and the delays.

Most of the images of the jackets on their website are AI generated, except for the jackets that Schott used to do for them ages ago, which they still haven't replaced with an abomination you actually receive. For example...

I had a similar experience with Gustin. Not jacket related but jeans related, so still outerwear. But I had to file a cc chargeback on a pair of jeans they sent me where the measurements were out of spec and were too small, so I arranged for a return and sent them back.

After they got them back I got an email that they were issuing me a store credit and wouldn't be issuing me the refund I had asked for, so I filed a cc chargeback. I then got a snarky whiny email with the same guilt trip line the OP got... 'we're a small business and your chargeback really hurt us!' and 'we even sent you a pre-paid label!', as if they had done me a huge favor by sending me a label to return them LOL. I replied and told them to get F'd

So if they told me something like "Hey it's out of stock right now, we'll get it to you as soon as possible." And then kept me appraised, I would have been more inclined to be patient.

The problem I had is the owner specifically gave me a deadline they would ship by (Tuesday), and then proceeded to ghost me when they did not ship on Tuesday.

Unfortunately 42's are the most popular size and this vest has gone viral.

Vests go viral now, eh? What a joke.

The telltale sign is that on one hand he says that the vest has attained overwhelming popularity and on the other he's miffed about cancelation of the sale. Were his initial statement true your cancelation would've been a complete non-issue as the next 42 customer would've been selected from that huge pile of orders and that customer would've been provided your vest.

Sounds like you met a dbag and are better off for having bailed.

Yuuup.
I was just gonna let it go as "poor, unresponsive service" until the phone call.

I responded to Kimberly to tell her to keep all further contact in writing as Chris called and made highly inappropriate remarks.

Question: Wouldn't claiming "Made in USA" be a violation of FTC regulations if they are drop shipping?

For a better idea of how the government looks at such issues consider reviewing the Chippewa boot case where they referred to their boots as having been made in the US but the Fed said the cows weren't... so Chippewa got a spanking and had to redraft their labels.

Nominally. There are many such... business, so to call them, that do the same thing. What they do is they find a manufacturer over there from whom they dropshop a ton of smaller items, like those gloves, while also having them to produce those few specific styles, such as that Black Stallion or the vests, which once through, they add a couple of snaps or laces on to and made in the USA it is.

There isn't a single photo of any of these jackets, made in the USA or otherwise, on their IG that's not either AI or by Schott.

Sorry to hear about this, OP. I've bought a few jackets from them. They usually take a while to ship. If they actually have it in stock, they'll ship within a few days. If not in stock, then it can months.

But it's definitely upsetting to hear about that phone call. That's so unprofessional. The customer is always right, if a business wants to stay in business for many decades and develop a great reputation. After reading this, I won't be ordering anything else from them.

I have noticed some funny business going on with the photos on their website. When I ordered my jackets from them, the photos were different. Then, the photos keep changing, usually for the worse. Are they AI generated photos? I don't even know how that works. But I guess that would explain the "photos" changing.
