Got this one in the other day.

I realized when I went to post it that I need to get two or three more detail shots, which I can't do at moment because I shipped this hat to @HatsBySam for some TLC.

It says "Aetna" on the liner, and it also says "built by Lee of Danbury" on the liner. There is an Aetna stamp on the sweatband that I neglected to document.

That hat was listed in the ad as having some areas of the sweatband that weren't connected. I have encountered this before, and I knew what I was getting into. That having been said, if this sweatband was connected at all, it was not connected by much lol. I may have exacerbated the problem looking for the sticker, but at that point I knew I was going to send it to the shop for repairs so que sera, sera.

The felt on this hat definitely has a blue component, unlike most of my hats which look blue due to having been photographed by an incompetent photographer.

Aetna? Lee of Danbury? Homburg - that part I'm sure of - the rest I will look into later lol

and finally a photo that is not designed to conceal the problem with the sweatband :)

Great hat, and Marshall Fields used to be the place!! Their flagship store in Chicago at 111 N State st was awesome!!
I don’t think I’ve ever seen a hat from Marshall Fields that wasn’t top shelf, “fully loaded” with sizer ribbon & all the goodies.

Oh yeah - I saw those. I was annoyed they were too small for me. Is that “magician’s estate” thing legit?

I didn't dig into the history until just now. They can't all have been from Anton Zamloch himself because he died in 1932. But it's possible some of the hats Splintercellsz dates to the 30s are actually late 20s or he purchased them right before his death.

Even more intriguing is that the initials AWZ are in the Stetson P l a y b o y which definitely dates to the 1950s. His three sons were Carl, Archer and Claude, so not an Anton Jr.'s initials. Maybe they named one of their sons after their dad and the hats are actually from the grandson of the original Zamloch? It does seem weird that the seller's story doesn't quite hold up. I'm not interested in hats for who owned them though, and these are all hat great hats in great shape.

But it makes sense they are all from an estate as they're all basically the same size and relative era and high quality hats in impeccable shape. My wife says I'm cut off until I sell some hats so I didn't even consider trying to pick up any (and I don't know how many beyond the Zephyr weight Stetson were a 7 1/4).

Geez Louise, I had 3 cups of coffee this morning but I guess they were weak. I put my contacts in the wrong eyes and then completely missed that Archer (one of Mr. Zamloch's) sons starts with the same letter as Anton. I even wrote his name here! *face palm*

I had written to the seller and asked how a hat sold in the 1950s could belong to a man who died in 1932 (I mean, he was a magician but that does push credibility a bit) and they responded that it must have belonged to his son Archer. They were going to update the listing for the hats with Archer's initials.

I love how the response to any question about misleading data is met with “I’ll update the listing” which never happens in my experience.

I only ping people on it when it looks like they are being deliberately misleading and not that often, but it drives me nuts. Sometimes it seems like they are trying to include misleading data on purpose and cover themselves by saying “look at the pictures”.

Not saying that is what is happening here of course.

This guy has awesome hats. I would have bought one if they fit me for sure. But come on dude - not every hat is in perfect condition and from 1927.

In their defense, they didn't specify the age of any of the hats that I can see and they did say that they had been passed down through a relative of the estate of Anton Zamloch (in the description anyway, the title is a little more questionable). They took down the several of the listings so I believe in fact they are updating them.

And they are (at least all the ones I looked at) in exceptional condition, unlike many "excellent" condition hats that have a sweatband that needs to be replaced or what have you.

Jean Peille homburg in black. Not sure, but i think it's pre-war. Great hat, came in a little dirty, but it was easily to clean and to shape. I think it's made of woolfelt. What do you think @Mean Eyed Matt ? One spot in the brim, but overall in a good condition. It's a great hat!
