"SAWRGEANT SOLLY!" bellows Lottie, forgetting that Willie walks the earth. "Dammitawltahell," mutters Solly, as he drops his cigarette down his shirt...

Perfect. I bet at some level, he likes her.

*******************************************************

Well, it could be worse. You could have seen the sign ten minutes later.

Or gotten it on your bald noggin'.

"How many sacks'a p'tatarrs we got left?" inquires Uncle Frank. "Y' betteh tell Pincus," sighs Danny, "t'get s'moeh..."

That entire story is not something the government should be proud of.

D I C K Tracy is not going to be your best man.

Especially if you can't even settle on one wrong name to call him.

I understand Hughes designed Jane Russell's Outlaw brassiere.
She was a 34D, not quite a pneumatic 36 yard field goal but nevertheless substantial.
A correct zero without an inch of Tennessee windage Kentucky elevation either neither.
She had legs for a hayloft nonchalance photo spread in the straw. :D

("I'm not worried," declares Dr. Sheldon Blick, between spoonsful of raisin bran. "I'm not worried in the least bit. And neither should you be." "She's out every night," insists Mrs. Bella Blick. "With that Schreibstein boy." "Sammy's fine," dismisses Dr. Blick. "A good boy. Good strong teeth." "That business he was mixed up in last winter," reminds Mrs. Blick. "Was all dismissed," retorts Dr. Blick, pouring himself a second cup of coffee. "You know the story. He had nothing to do with any of it." "And now," continues Mrs. Blick. "It's eight in the morning and already she's out at that hamburger stand! What kind of summer is that for a sixteen year old girl?" "You worked in a steam laundry when you were sixteen," chuckles the doctor. "Anyway, we should go have a look at that stand some night. I had one of those Big Joe things the other day for lunch over at Schreibstein's, and it was the best hamburger I ever ate." "Since when do you," snorts Mrs. Blick, "eat hamburgers." "Since our daughter told me to," laughs the doctor "Besides, that Joe Petrauskas is all right. And so's his wife, even if I do have to stick half a box of cotton in her mouth to get her to stop talking when I have her in the chair." The doctor chuckles, as the telephone interrupts the conversation. "Hello," greets Mrs. Blick. "Yes, this is BEachview 2-9294. Yes, I'm her mother. Who? No, I'm sorry, she doesn't know any Mr. Sobol..." She trails off as Dr. Blick hustles to the phone, wildly gesturing, and takes the receiver. "Yes, Mr. Sobol? This is Dr. Blick, Shirley's father. Yes, she mentioned you might call here. Yes. Thursday? Well, she's not here right now, and... Oh, I see. Well, look, let me write this down. Uh huh? Thursday. All right, I'll get this message to her right away. Yes sir. Thank you for calling." He hangs up the phone, his eyes sparkling behind his glasses. "Bella," he resumes. "Do you know how to get to Ozone Park...?")

("I'm glad somebody aroun'eeh," sighs Joe, as he watches the vending man empty the coins out of the cigarette machine, "is makin' money." "Y'know, Coily, y'ra funny guy," smirks the man. "Hey, y'know wha'd go good heeh, is a jukebawx. Ya hot lit'l ticket onna rolleh skates could do some real steppin." Lissen, you..." growls Joe, as a taxi pulls into the lot, and an anxious-looking woman emerges. "Uh oh," mutters Shirley Blick, catching sight of her mother....)

Did you know the News was started in 1919 as an imitation of the popular English tabloids?

Daily_News_1946_08_05_185.jpg

But where's the catharsis in that?

Daily_News_1946_08_05_386.jpg

YES WE KNOW THAT CAN YOU PLEASE ALLOW US THE TINIEST BIT OF JOY?

Some psychiatrists are in it for the challenge.

Shirley must be very grateful for her father. A kid needs at least one parent to understand/"get" him or her.

QED.

Separately, it's 1946 and the cigarette companies have already "lawyered-up" their advertising.

Good for Prof Cyril E. M. Joad; it needed to be said.

He's been completely relentless on that point - a total killjoy.

Doesn't work that way, Nasty.

Puffed wheat isn't SO bad.

Pour enough sugar on it or cornflakes or puffed rice and none of them are bad at all. And it doesn't seem like the price of sugar has gone up in this round.

Second cup of coffee, and stumbled over this morning's EM Cyrill Joad's American film
scold with Howard Hughes' fantastic aeronautical engineering achievement wither Jane Russell
thirty-four Delta brassiere structural exactitude; yet nary a word of praise for inherent mathematical precision. Haven't seen Linda Darnell's Summer Storm awhiles turgid adolescence.

Various assorted legal conundrum and justiciability doctrine applied law enforcement noted; however, I'm more enticed Hollywood and Manhattan divorce contest. Especially intestate rascals with posthumous estate and wills lying naked plunder for chorus girls, starlets, and disinherited prodigal profligate bastar.s.

Hotshot getting wise to the girl nemesis seems Caniff's pencil play sketch.

Meanwhile, readers might have wondered about the long train commute Sally and Alice have each weekday out to the Western Electric plant in Kearny. Here's an H&M Railroad promotional piece that shows a bit of the route. They take the BMT into the city from Brooklyn to Hudson Terminal, and then the H&M from Hudson Terminal to Newark, and then hop a shuttle bus out to Kearny. Every damn day...

One of my commutes from my NJ days was an ~20 minute walk to the train station a town over (car cut it by ten minutes but that cost daily parking, so hoof it I did); followed by a train trip from New Brunswick to Newark; followed by the Hudson Tubes (by then called PATH), into Penn Station, NYC, followed by a subway across and uptown; followed by a ten minute walk to the office. It was nearly two hours if everything worked, and everything didn't always work – in fact it was quite the opposite. Not only physically, but mentally quite exhausting.

Mr. Rickey: "Mickey?... Mickey? You there?"
Mr. Owen: "Yes, sorry, Mr. Rickey, I just dropped the receiver."

Things seem to be going fine in that town.

There are lines you don't cross, and one of them is the line of Sinatra fans outside the Paramount.

I violated one of my rules and read a Mike Gold article this morning and it reminded me why I made that rule in the first place.
