Another Resistol Shantung coming into the stable. I'm loving the Conley 20X. Replacing the bad Stetson with another Resistol Shantung from the days when they were harder straw. Think it's 80's or early 90's. Don't want to go too old as then have trouble with leather sweat bands but this one looked new & it was a price I couldn't resist. Black studded leather band but no air holes. It's a 5 Star. Just was so primo I had to adopt it. 7 long oval. The 7 regular oval has been fitting ok so hope it's fine. Just a summer work hat but the older straws seem to be made pretty well. This is when they used stars instead of X but I suppose it's like an X. Really want to find a primo is more with a vented woven straw design. This one is not one of those George Strait that Resistol pushes so many of.

I can't remember but the size tag of 7 without the 56/7 is an older tag design. Not sure when they started adding the metric on the tag.

I found this Knox stingy brim fedora on DePoP somehow or another, and it was cheap so I snagged it. Came with a Knox box. I pulled this hat out of it and put the Twenty I got from Cadillac Man in it. Not sure if that's allowed, but it makes me happy. I think I bought this one first between the two new Knox's.

My first real hat war story, thankfully it isn't that bad, but thankfully it isn't that bad - somebody thought it was a good idea to pin this feather right through the bow keeper. Wasn't too happy to see that, and it left a visible hole in the bow keeper, but a small one. Maybe it will settle out over time.

I'm wearing this one right now, and I think this thing needs a pinch and snap the front down, but this is what I did with it on the day.

Guessing late 50s maybe early 60s because it has a block number but no depth. Getting into the era of pretty good hats though (although maybe your Borsalino is around this age? I can't remember seeing the inventory tag on it for dating)... How does it stack up against your modern hats from Optimo and Art? Better finish? More moldable?

I have quite a few hats from this late 50s - 60s era, but almost none (I think one) from the 30s-40s and that one is a bowler, so irrelevant to the felt conversation.

This hat has the felt I prefer. Soft, light, easy to shape. Whether that is an indication of quality, or anything other than weight, who knows?

Of the modern hats I have, only a couple of Optimos have a similar feel. The custom hats that I have (aside from Optimo) so far are all sturdier than this hat.

For sure. I can't entirely puzzle it out myself either. I bought two 3X open roads from the mid 50s and one has thin light felt that shapes very easily and the other has thicker felt that needs steam to make it more pliable. Have picked up a few more 3Xs since then and they all seem to be slightly different. But all great hats.

I also have a variety of Royal and Royal DeLuxe Stetsons and they are similarly not easily ****ed into one category or the other, even based on age (have a late 50s Royal Stetson that has felt that is almost as nice as the lighter 3X I have, although the sweatband isn't quite as nice).

I do know that as rule hats from that era and older are likely to have felt that is pleasing to work with and sweatbands that can sometimes still rival the best that are on the market today, and have the brim width and blocking profiles I prefer.
