First day of my 5-day weekend. Stopped at a nursery this morning and doing a little gardening in my 4x Beaver Stetson gambler. Not sure of the year on this one - 70'/ early 80's? It has the square / United Union tag. I think whoever owned it before me must have left it in a hot car - it shrunk at least 2 hat sizes. There is now a large gap at the sweatband after stretching it back to my size. I added the front dents and reshaped the brim that had a much steeper curl when I got it. The hat band is not original - I had it sitting around the house. It has more bling than I normally go with, but it seems to fit this hat well.

Edit: The hat was sold at The Big 44 Western Store in Boise, ID, which apparently closed it's doors in 1991.

Open Road Thursday and a lead in to Memorial Day. Nice little embroardered liner 3x in a Long Oval. Still has the original $16 price tag inside the sweatband from Barrys Dept Store in Killeen Tx ( Ft Hood, Tx). I found this hat in a Cookeville Tn thrift store (The town that my Mothers family is from) The seller indicated it came from the estate of an local Army helicopter pilot that died in Viet Nam in 1967. Major Johnie Wright Jr.

With the condition of the hat, Im supposing he may have bought this hat just before deploying overseas and shipped his belongings home. My privilege to be its current caretaker.

Thoughts, remembrances, and prayers for those who gave it all on this Memorial Day weekend

Well, I was running out the door to get us a steak for dinner before the steak-getting place closes, and lo and behold it’s pouring down rain. I went and to my wife and I was like dang it I can’t wear my silk cap in this mess.

She said I should get a Paddington Bear hat.

She thinks she’s funny. Now I’m trying to figure out what a Paddington Bear hat is called.

In the meantime:
