Thank you guys. This O’Farrell was made in ~1989-1990 in Kevin’s shop in Durango & was blocked & shaped as a Rancher. It’s all natural beaver. I’m a technical guy & study a lot of blocking. It’s not a Gus but most people don’t know the difference. If you have a Western block that has some taper in it, one way to minimize the taper is to stand the sides up more by widening or opening up the back of the crease & drawing the crease in & narrower as it comes forward (think lightbulb shaped). It’s closest to what Ritch Rand called a Tom Horn. It’s the same principle as when you put a diamond crease in a fedora & it makes the hat fit wider on your head. I brought the bumpers down on the sides & had the hatband made by a beader.
Charlie, fire up a charcoal grill or little hibachi & throw on a piece of pork fat to sizzle, smoke & mask the other smell. Guaranteed to make you hungry.
