What Hat Are You Wearing Today ?

It was a beautiful day off today just outside of Portland, Oregon. I wore the Northwest Hats and took some lovely photos. Still editing them though... but I like this one quite a lot of the hat on a wine cask. I'll include a couple of others that look promising.

Unfortunately there was some business with the truck going on this morning and I could not make it into Portland, but next time I am here I definitely want to. I feel very resonant with this area.

Back to work tomorrow, so won't have much time to post, but maybe I will find a few seconds to check in on the hat parade through the weekend.

For today and this evening, a dark gray Anderson, from the Italian hat maker and seller Cappelleria Melegari. Very soft felt, as other Italian manufacturers are, this one came to me by way of the Netherlands.

Mark, Thank you! I buy most of them from German and Austrian sellers. I usually try to focus on 1950s and older hats that are in very good condition + in my size.

Absolutely STUNNING hat, Steve!! That lining is magnificent! Loved reading the history of the company; Luise must have been an extraordinary woman to accomplish what she did in the era in which she did it. Thanks for this!

[The Shoe]

Having difficulty getting pictures up promptly of late. It’s the weekend and I’m finally posting the hats we chose last weekend to celebrate our 29th anniversary.
Stetson Custom V for me and a black Akubra Leisure Time for Etsuko.

An oaked New Zealand Chardonnay to celebrate. Isabel Estate never fails to deliver quality. This was a creamy, buttery little number that would have been even better in a proper Chardonnay glass.

Karl Misik (KAMI) "Special" possibly late 1930s early 1940s. Karel Misík was located in Husinec (Bohemia), Czechoslovakia. Karl Misik took over O.F. Hess Prague from his uncle and moved all production to Husinec. This Wool Soft Felt was part of 2015 New Old Stock Czech find.

Here are the photos from the seller that show all the hats and the two wooden frame cardboard crates. They were all Soft Felt Hats from the 1930s and early 1940s.

The blazer was a lucky find, but it's not brand new. My wife and I were at a vintage weekend festival. On the Sunday, the last day, the traders were all packing their wares away, most would be in the main marquee for that night's big finale.
At one of those traders stall my wife spotted the blazer, he was asking fifty pounds, I tried it on, it was a bit tight when buttoned. "Suits you," said the trader, "He's right," agreed my wife. "Look," the trader said, "I've had a good weekend with sales, give me twenty pounds and wear it unbuttoned." "Sold."
Since then my wife has repositioned the buttons, made the shirt and trousers and treated me to the hat, so now you know.

Indeed my lady is a talent, to which my bulging wardrobe is testament to. When she made the trousers, she took the hat with her to the fabric shop where she found an almost perfect match.
It can be difficult keeping cream trousers clean and stain free, but on the plus side they will compliment most blazers.

This blue blazer being a good example. The photo was taken previously, but it's what I will be wearing later on today.

Yowza!!! Another truly stunning week's worth of finery, Stefan! I'm choosing the Morreton as #1, the Borsalino Vaiato as #2, and the Lees as #3, but almost ANYTHING in this week's lineup could step into any ranking. Wonderful showing!

Herbert Johnson - Soft Bowler
Warm Grey Felt
4 1/2 Soft Round Crown
d'Orsay Curl Brim 1 7/8 front/back 1 1/2 Sides
1 inch charcoal grosgrain ribbon

As our friend/lounge alumni Brent has said.. “sometime a hat just speaks to me” That was certainly the case with this Herbert Johnson soft bowler. It caught my attention with its warm toned grey felt and darker charcoal binding on its d'Orsay Curl Brim. Based on its pictures I was kinda envisioning a bit more of a soft homburg kinda crown but in person it is in fact a bowler shaped crown but still soft and shapeable. I imagine at a time when soft felts were becoming more and more popular while stiff felts/bowlers were still a bit of a standard especially in the British market this Soft Bowler made for a bit of a crossover. That said.. I’m quite pleased with it for two reasons… first it finally checks off the box of grey bowler. Second… the Soft Bowler designation makes it quite an interesting piece, an example of which I had not come across previously. And it’s a Herbert Johnson to boot. I’m no expert on dating HJ hats but the 38 New Bond Street puts it squarely in the rather broad range of 1895 and 1975. The notation on the liner By Appointment to Her Royal Majesty The Queen Royal Hatters puts us about 1953 or later. It certainly looks like the quality of hats we often see from the 1950s so that would be my guess. If you’ve ever had the urge to reach up and squeeze a pinch in the front of a bowler… this is the hat for you!
