I actually kept the liner in and didn't have any issues. I did eventually remove the liner but I can't remember why. Didn't notice a change in comfort level.

In my town in Malaysia, where I spend most of my time, the temps are almost consistently 31 Celsius all year. Anything more than that became noticeably hot in the FED IV, but it only gets hotter in Melaka around March.
As much as the heat it’s the humidity that does it for me. Last year I worked a cheaper will gel hat out in the field and it kept the sun off and dropping it in a rice paddy wasn’t an issue, but it was a tad warmer than I would have wanted.

I’m not sure if it’s possible but I was considering putting eyelets in the sides of a fed 4 and pulling the liner out, then it’d be ideal for summer.

I'm assuming there's something that attaches to those two cutouts on either side of the round part that is above the screw, but am curious if it's inside or on the outside. It's also missing the pointer that comes down to show what size you're at but I figured that would be easy for them to replicate as well. Thanks in advance!

Are you sure the screw is not just backed out past it's normal operating range? It looks robust enough that maybe it does not need another attachment between the two halves.

I’m off to Australia in a weeks time and am going to pick up a Cattleman. I think they’re a great looking hat, unlined with 3 ventilation eyelets on each side. I do wear straws in the Japanese summer, but planning to wear the Cattleman, too.

No, it was closed when I got it. The screw is stationary and one half of the dome extends out from the center. Whatever connected to the grooves in the screw to make it expand and contact when you turn the screw isn't there anymore.

What are good rain hat options? Considering getting the Alligator Cap from Maniffatura Ceccarelli, but I'm open to other suggestions. To be worn with a trench coat & other non hooded outerwear...

I was thinking of picking one of those up used to wear as a ‘beater’, since they come up on Mercari from time to time.

As for new, I find I much prefer ribbon rather than leather hat bands, I might pick up a campdraft as a summer hat and just remove the liner. The lighter colour should help by reflecting some heat and it’s not as though I plan on spending all day in the sun, most of my field work is in forested areas.

Years ago I bought an Akubra Riverina for a warm climate felt. Vents (though lined), and I replaced the leather band with a pugaree. About to do the same with a used Cattleman (unlined as standard), vis ebay. I do have a Campdraft; it's a hefty felt that keeps heat in (even in Silverbelly). Lack of vents would make a big difference even with the liner removed, though if you knew somewhere reliable that could fit eyelets thst would make a difference. Venting without eyelets is always an option, though nit somethinv I'd risk as a DIY.

That’s something I had wondered. I only have the Fed IV for comparison and relative felt thicknesses/densities is something to consider. I was up in Fukushima yesterday glad of the warmer felt, although I suspect it might be a little much in a few months time.

I found my Canpdraft heavier than my Feds, but it is a few years old, if snyone has heard of the felt changing? Mine was the stiffest Akubra I've had when new, very much a Western type felt.

My Fed IV felt like it was probably ****** proof when new, but it has softened up through daily use. The only comparison I have is my Borsalino which is like putty so probably not representative.

I’m also looking at the squatter as a possible option. Anyone have an idea what the Felton those is like?

Could anyone who has both comment on the relative felt weight of Akubra Campdraft and Squatter?

Are all Lost Worlds leathers "the same"?
What I mean is whether it's the black, seal, olive or navy horsehide, do they all go through the same tanning & finish, with the only difference being color and thickness?

That’s where I got my Bluegrass Green Cattleman that I use as my barbecue hat.

Hey guys, I have my grandfather's Borsalino hat from the (I believe) late thirties or early forties. He wore it regularly and I treasure it. Sadly the interior has separated from the felt. Is there anyone that you can recommend that would be able to competently repair and restore this hat? Thanks in advance.

This is not the right thread for jacket questions. You want to ask that here:

To answer you: all the horsehides from LW are the same except for thickness in so far as they are all tanned in the same way (with a LW proprietary chrome tanning process). Of course that doesn't mean some aren't better than others, some stiffer than others, some grainier than others, etc. but so far as I know Stu does not and has never used any other horsehide except his own.

The goat is not all the same - it has been sourced from various suppliers over the years.

I can't say anything about the deerskin Stu uses, except that he sources that as well.

And now he is offering steerhide which he is also tanning himself, so that should be all the same (tanned with the exact same process as the horse - he told me that himself on the phone last month). Steer has only been on offer for a month or so.

Looks like an unreeded sweatband which will require a replacement.

Thanks! Sorry about the thread I don't know how to move it there.

Perfect, because I love Stu's HH
