It could never be a true D‑1 mechanics jacket, but rather a hybrid design inspired by the USN M‑445A and AN‑J‑4 shearling flight jackets.

Fair point. It’s based on Aero’s D-1 pattern and is labeled as such. This one was a custom order, so some details differ from a strict repro. Reminiscent of the USN M-445A and AN-J-4, I agree.

Those pockets are A2 not anything from a sheepskin
Yes, good eye. The pockets were specified as part of the custom order. Aero allows quite a bit of flexibility if you ask. It’s built on their D-1 pattern, but not a strict reproduction.

Yes, Aero is very customization‑friendly
they’re known for tweaking patterns to customer specs.
If you are not chasing strict WWII correctness, this kind of build is a very practical and interesting hybrid.

Really surprised that Aero allows such extended customization. I know that with the previous management (pre 2013) many frankenjackets left Galashiels; however since then I know they are far stricter, I thought they wouldn't allow any changes in the character of the jacket.

I remember that years ago they even had a page on their site with photos of customer custom builds, one guy in particular had several made, some with very interesting results, and I think he was also a member over at VLJ.
But I don’t recall anything this radically “original”.
I have in mind a G-1 in burgundy leather with alpaca lining that was particularly nice.

There's a lot of combinations you could have when you think of it
