I was in my Ultrafino Havana most of the day, it has turned into a great work hat. This evening it is a little cooler and very pleasant, I got one of my Wolfbraes off the shelf, wearing it brim snapped down tonight.

Northwest Hats warm weather mode. This hat was specifically designed for four seasons: the dimensional brim offers some extra protection from the elements front and back while presenting a more reserved portrait appearance and the liner comes out to reveal yin-yang styled vent holes on either side.

This hat has been around the world (literally) numerous times and is a permanent member of the headwear collection that accompanies me on the semis (a job I am still anxious to get back to...).

Happy Juneteenth to all.

Tomorrow I turn 50.

Some of my favourite hats on the Lounge are from Northwest Hats. That’s another beauty!
Welcome to the half-century club (here in Japan, we’d call you a hanseikichan). Have a great day tomorrow.

The latest project is all done and the Stetson is heading out for its first trip in public this morning. This one came together nicely... Wish they all went as smooth as this one did. Basically, except for making up a new sweatband, the rest was just a good cleaning

I take it you do a lot of hat restoring. Be great to see the before as well as after photos. I enjoy seeing people restore and reuse things.

Except for the toasted sweatband, this one wasnt all that bad... just dirty. A good cleaning, a new sweatband, a new braided Horsehair hatband, and some steaming/ shaping and its back in service

I take it with the vintage hats the leather without conditioning breaks down. Does the natural oils from the skin from regular wear reduce or increase this process?

Ive always suspected it can vary depenting on the Ph balance of ones sweat more-so than the skin oils. Repeated wetting and drying without using any conditioner will do a number on any leather. If something just dried out, adding oil/ moisture back to the fibers can usually put it back in service. A few yrs back I came into possession of three whole vegetable tanned heavy weight/ thick saddle skirting hides that had been rolled up and dried for probably 50 yrs ( I physically could not unroll them) It took a few weeks and a couple GALLONS of neatsfoot oil, but eventually got them rehydrated and flat. Used them just fine for a couple years on a bunch of belts and holsters

Sweatbands are a thinner, usually softer leather. If it really old without any tears, My opinion is that its best to remove the sweatband and do a serious conditioning / oiling before ever trying to flex or bend. That at least lets you save any original stamping/ embossing

A couple of month back I was contacted by a video producer from the Daily Mail. He said he had an idea for a new web series and his pilot was going to be about the decline of men's hats. While doing research, he found my website and some of my other videos, and wanted to interview me for the video. I agreed, and we did the interview for the pilot. He showed me the pilot and said that the series had been greenlit by his bosses, so he interviewed me again, for about an hour, and this time with video. Anyway, the video turned out pretty well, though I misspoke at the beginning. I meant to say early 1800s but it came out early eighteenth century and I didn't catch it. Oh well. He left a lot of footage on the cutting room floor, but it's still a good video.

Nice one!
