I own an original Stetson "Cav" hat from back when I flew helicopters for the Army. I love the look and feel of the Beaver felt. It is stiff and heavy.
I have wanted a civilian version of that hat for years. Recently I found that I have a local hat maker right here in Victoria, BC. Patterson Hats did not take a stock hat off the shelf and steam shape it. He sized me with a conformateur and hand-crafted, from scratch, this from 100% Beaver Fur Felt. This is now my everyday wear hat. Great sun and rain protection.
The hat band on the Patterson was made by me on a 20 shaft tape loom of my own design just to make hat bands and other things like guitar straps with complex patterns.
Among other hats in my collection are 2 Akubra Fedoras.
I'll wear my Patterson to show off when I visit the Akubra factory during an Australia trip in September.
