Has anyone else noticed lately an avalanche of dirty/beater/abused hats up for auction that are listed as "fishing hats", "driving hats", "Hat with character" or "hat with patina" What amazes me more than the description, is the fact that SOMEBODY is evidently actually buying them. Almost as funny as hats that are listed as an "Open Road trilby fedora hat" or how anything with a brim morphs into an "Indiana Jones" hat. And we havent even touched on the "Distressed" hats... things that look like what once was a decent hat thats been branded, felt ripped, or oil poured on it,Thinking I should break out a box of wooden matches and see if I can pass off some of my beaters as a custom Nick Fouquet hat. LOL

What I don't understand is all of the people who are taking vintage hats and burning them or drawing lines all over them with an electric wood-burner and then trying to resell them as if they are fine art...

And then there are a couple different ebay sellers that always look like they have nothing on while modeling their hats.... Makes me feel like I should go wash my hands or take a shower or something when I see their ads. Not good marketing.... PUT A SHIRT ON!

Receive a couple nice ebay hats today. First is a really clean 3x Open Road in 7-1/4 Long Oval. LO Fits really well. Brim snaps really nicely but not very much, ( its almost flat). Havent done anything to it yet at all so Im rather happy. I MAY eventually steam and reshape a bit, but for now Ill leave the Cattlemans Crease, and snap up in back and down in front. Time to do some bushing

Todays SECOND ebay sucess is a nice light taupe Champ Featherweight... 2-1/4" brim ( My others are darker brown and black) Love the way these lightweight hats feel on the head. Guess I need to get serious and find a silverbelly too. One of my grandfathers had a silver Featherweight that really looked almost like an Open Road ( slightly bigger brim)
Hat looks absolutely perfect... I hit it with a tough of steam and the iron sputtered.... those spots on the crown are just damp water spots that hadnt quite dried . Not a mark anywhere on the hat. Super happy with this one. Just need to clean a little dried hair dressing off of the sweatband.
TWO almost perfect ebay hays in one day are almost too much to believe

Woo hoo! another ebay "contest" hat came in ( theres evidently a contest going on to see who can cram a hat into the smallest envelope lol) At least they wrapped this poor little thing in plastic so its clean
Its a modest little Royal Stetson ( mid 60s- early 70's?) with a 2-1/2" Bound edge. Im assisting someone who wanted an inexpensive kicking around hat, and they're a smaller size.... so theres no temptation for me to keep it. Fur is nice and soft and it decent shape. Liner, Ribbon, Grosgrain edge binding, and Sweatband are clean and in good shape. Seems to want to pop back out to normal so I think it will be fine after a bit or steam. Feather is toast, but it does have a Stetson hat pin.
It kind of amazes me that Ive never received an auction hat rolled up in a cardboard tube lol... Always an adventure with ebay and goodwill hats. All things considered, a decent $9 hat

Well ARRRUGH!!!! here we go again! Goodwill in Seattle seems to be a frequent " stuff it in an envelope" seller. In the big scheme of things, it was an $8 hat, and its actually a nice clean, cute little 1-1/2" brim Selve-edge, 3x so it should be salvageable... but DANG! It does have a nice discrete metal Stetson logo hatpin that I can rehome onto another hat.
At least they didnt vacuum bag it
Be aware if you bid on anything from Goodwill In Seattle, Wa....Unless the ad shows an original box with it, just plan on this treatment. (this is the FOURTH envelope hat Ive had from them)

Not an ebay hat but a $10 win from Goodwill.This one actually came in a box instead of an envelope lol
A Miller Hat Executive Series fur felt fedora. Really soft medium dress weight felt. Modest 4-3/4" crown originally with a rather floppy 3" brim. Looked a bit funny with a big brim and short crown, so I trimmed to a 2-1/4" brim. Did some brushing, steaming, a light reblocking and a bit or brim ironing. Little bit of brim tweaking still to do , but Im happy. Thinking that the floppy brim would benefit from a brim binding. Should be a good knock around hat

Grumbling incoming, I purchased a hat for a pretty good deal the other day and not long after purchase i get a text from the seller, wasn't aware sellers got buyers phone numbers, telling me that the ebay fees were too high and he was going to sell on offer up and asked me to cancel the sale. Not sure what will happen from here.

Optimo won today for 483. Adding tax and shipping, 543. This would have cost at least 2500 in Optimo, probably more. I'm glad my adversaries were feeling stingy.
