If you had to wear just 1 pair of boots for the rest of your life, what would they be?

Dude, the US Marines had crepe soles on their combat boots in WWII and the Red Wing Moc Toes have crepe soles and have been used on dirt trails for decades!

I wear Red Wing 877 doing forestry work and to climb on roofs (tubing chimneys) and they are great soles for both acitivites.

Crepe for life!

I haven't tried RWs, but my GS' soles just simply don't feel like they are too grippy or even durable. Any kind of tread or ridges was basically gone in a couple weeks. I believe RW uses Vibram soles while GS mounts their own, so there may be a difference there. Still very comfy, though!

Redwing uses their own soles. A bit harder and less squish than the vibram ones, but they last a bit longer.
This pair I’ve had since 2020 and have worn them regularly for both work and travel and the tread still has plenty of wear left in them!

RW also uses their own, no vibram branding on my RW soles.
Yep, that's what happens when you wear them a lot on concrete, they do get slick and slipery on wet smooth surfaces after a while.
It's all a compromise really, crepes grip really well everywhere in the dry, they are pretty slipery in the wet.
The tradoff is that in the mud you wont end up carrying kilos of mud stuck underneath your soles like you would with lug soles.
I have had both and have decided that overall the positives of crepes outweigh the negatives, haven't worn anything with lugs in more than a decade and i am not sliping and sliding everywhere...

Joseph Cheaney also does some similar models, shiny polished caps but pebbled on the creasing areas. I always linger at their shop window to look but they’re out of my price range for the time being.

Yes, price is a killer. Always worth keeping an eye on sales, though. I've seen a lot of very nice new Trickers selling for half price in occasional sales as well.

Trickers country brogues are also on my future wishlist. Best I’ve got right now is a pair of Loake Royals. They look nice and are surprisingly a very comfortable fit but I know they’re not gonna last forever as they’re starting to get a crease in the toe box even with cedar shoe trees

My choice all depends on if by ‘boots’ we’re limited to only those which are either lace up or more ‘dressy’
If not, then the most comfortable boots I wear are a pair of elastic sided Redbacks.
Granted they might look to be more of a work boot, because that is exactly what they are, however their thick, hardwearing but soft leather uppers with equally soft and hardwearing soles (which I find are much more comfortable than Dr Martens Airwair) mean that if I was limited to just one pair of boots for eternity then it would be these.
Also, don’t confuse Redbacks with Blundstones. They might be more fashionable but Blundstones really can’t be compared to either the quality or comfort found in a pair of Redbacks.

Love seeing the super old redwings!

My question was intentionally open ended to see what people truly thought but good points about it being dependant on weather, comfort and so on.

I guess if I could bundle in style, durability, longevity, comfort, if that was even possible to make a decision on one pair of boots I would. I like to buy things that I know are going to last a long time even though I know I will eventually probably change my mind and want something else.

I’ve got a few pairs of Tricker country boots (all have had funky resoles), but my go to are a pair of Tricker chukka boots, they came with a crepe sole which always looked grubby, now on Vibram gumlite sole which is very comfy.

To me the most important thing about shoes is to never have to think "Crap i'm not wearing the right shoes!"

IMO with a pair of 877 you are pretty much always wearing the right shoes for the job, or at least i have not found a job i couldn't do in them.

This exactly! Commute into the city for work, trip to the pub after, zombie apocalypse kicks off in the evening - when I find a pair that does all that, I'll part with my cash. I think the moc toes may be a strong contender.
